Pioneer Prru.i Were it not tliat physicians are pro verbially exact in all statements of cases under treatment or brought within tin* range of their professional knowledge, the extraordinary narra tive recorded below might U.‘’|>ercni|>- torily consigned to tin* realm of “fishy yarns.” But surrounded as' it is by personal knowledge and professional veracity, the rejsirter is diaposed to accept it without question, and leave the reader to settle his or her own mind iq on the more incredible points involved in the case, and widen are substantially embraced in the accom panying condensation of the state ment of Dr. Aiuenzo Moyer, whose oillee may he found at No. 254 Hen- nepi n-avenue. According to Dr. Mover’s state ment, as prepared for the Mr (lira/ Timm, he had occasion to ask the ad vice of another professional friend named Dr. Tanner, during the latter part of the summer. Drs. Moyer and Tanner called on a patient in the night time, and uihui their return to tin* office in Hennepin avenue, Dr- Tanner emnplfiined or illnem, and n - nectod with Dr •cping . Moyei r’s office. Her he remained for ten days, and during the entire time resolutely declined ill proffered nourishment, and limited himself to cold water exclusively. At the end of ten days Dr. Tanner con sidered himself sufficiently recovered to indulge in exercise in t1ieo|>eii air, but concluded to continue the fasting test in order to see how long human life may be prolonged without the use of any nourishment whatever, lie remained in Dr. Moyer’s office, and was so continuously under the ob servation of Moyer’that the latter is positively convinced that he did not take food surreptitiously. During the latter part of the ti*st Dr. Tanner was dally examined by Ids friend and associate, and the exact records of ins symptoms were jotted down. Dr. Tanner remained with out fissl just 42 days, and the only things list'd during the time ill the shape of nourishment or stimulant were a daily walk in the open air and a swallow of water whenever inclina tion prompted—a sufficiently light diet for any purine. Toward the latter portion of the test unusual phys ical symptoms were discovered. While Dr. Tanner did not show any material reduction in tissue or strength, the action of the heart wan visibly weakened, and not the faint est trace of pulsation could be discov ered at the wrist. With the apiieur- anoe of this symptom of monbund condition Dr. Tanner “returned t" his feed” iii precisely 42 days after engaging in Ids extraordinary experi ment. Dr. Moyer states that lie ate sparingly at first, hut soon developed an enormous upiictite, such as would prove an immediate ruin to any well- regulated church festival or boarding house of limited capital. Gradually, however, normal habits were resum ed, and the “patient” is now in Ids usual health, ready for some other man to begin the experiment where he left off.
