—Captain Heaton Grantland, of
Spalding county, is elected over
Unrkness, of Butts county, to tlie
Semite by sixteen votes. He ran in
dependent.
—A colored mafi of Liberty county,
over eighty years of age, walked eight
miles during the worst part of tlie
rain last Wednesday to vote tlie Dem
ocratic ticket.
—The Union and Recorder is well
persuaded that the future well being
of Milledgeville is not dependent
upon any such issues as those ,tliat
have just been settled.
—In Washington county tlie two
Independents, Peacock and Brantly,
shackles, escaped through a h'ole in
tlie wall of the liopif in which the
fc»ng was quartered at night and
broke for tlie river. The dogs wtre
1 nosed, and the guards fired some six
or eight shots at the fugitive. He
Jumped into tlie Havannab river, and
as lie was seen no more it is supposed
he was drowned.
—Mrs. Elizabeth Roundtree, wife
of Mr. A. H. Roundtree, who lives
about ten miles southwest of Ameri-
cub, came to her deatli in a most
shocking manner on tlie 8th inst.
Mr. Roundtree had left the premises
hut a short while when his attention
was uttraeted toward tlie house on
seeing a dense smoke issuing from
tlie roof of tlie building. On arriving
at tlie bouse he found the body of his
wife lying in tlie middle of the floor
devoid of clothing aiid badly burned.
Mrs. R. was subject to fits.
—Sausage sells in Montgomery at
10 rents per pound ; in Troy 15 cents.
—For some time past the farmers
have been bringing a good deal of
pork to Troy. It sells at from 61 to 7
cents per pound.
Birmingham City Council lias
gotten into a squabble about the elec
tion of an alderman, and at last ac
counts there were two boards.
—Tlie flow of emigration from l'ike
eounty to tlie West, still continues.
Every week sees the departure of
large crowds, seeking more genial
homes in Arkansas and Texas.

one thousand dollars out of this coun
ty in tlie last two or three weeks, by
compelling prisoners and witnesses

day after day unable to get a trial.

—The Berrien county Nr.urn gives
the particulars of tlie brutal murder
of Mr. E. F. Sweat, of Tebauville, on
the Atlantic and Gulf road. Several
negroes have been arrested on suspi
cion.
—Mr. J. H. Fulghuin’s gin, at Rld-
dleville, was burned on the 1st inst.
with 2,500 pounds of seed cotton. It
is supposed tlie tire originated from
the engine. Loss about five hundred
dollars.
—Hon. John Morrissey, of New
York, is greatly improving in health

—The champion hog was killed by
Mr. G. S. Hooks, of Washington. It
weighed 433 net pounds, and was not

was a large attendance. Commis

—Wednesday, at tlie residence of
Judge R. F. Lyon, in Macon, Mr. Z.
L. Bashlor, of ’ Savannah, was mar
ried to Miss Jennie L. Maxey, of
Macon. After a supper tendered by
Mrs. Lyon, tlie young couple left for
Savannali on tlie night train
—The corn crib and contents of
Mr. J. J-. Birmans, of Berrien county
were incendiarised. Tlie house eon
tained 400 bushels of corn which had
just been housed, 35 bushels of oats,
all his farming utensils, besides bri
dles, saddles ami other property.
—Last Friday will hereafter be
known in the annals of Taliaferro
county nH finger day, as no less than
five persons in that county laid their
fingers cut by gin machinery. When
improperly fondled, a cotton gin is
about ub dangerous as gin in its liquid
state.
—Hon. Henry Taylor, of Washing
ton county, slaughtered during tlie
cold spell last week si xty-three hogs,a 11

averaging one hundred and ninety-

—Mr. C. E. Smith, of Crawford
ville, has recently purchased a large
flock of sheep at San Mateo, in New
Mexico, from Colonel Richard Peters,

put his flock in charge of a trusty
man and make the business permit

—Ahorse belonging to Col. A. O,
Bacon got frightened and started at ti
rapid gait. A negro boy seized tlie
•mggy wheel and tried to hold him
back, but failed. Finally tlie wheel
struck a tree, tlie horse ‘ broke loose,
staggered about twenty feet and fell
dead. It was supposed his neck was
broken, but how it could have been
done is hard to tell. The buggy was
also badly smashed.
—Near Sanderaville on Friday tlie
coat of Mr. C. H. Odom was caught
by the upright shaft of tlie elevator to
a flour mill, and lie was whirled
around at tlie rate of one hundred
and twenty circles to tlie minute. He

Shooting Club the score resulted: 324
birds for Ponder’s side and 200 birds
for Dillard’s side. Mr. (teorge Clisby
of Pender’s party, killed a young deer,
which counted for 100 birds. The day
was splendid and tlie shooting flue,

Mr. J. A. Whaley, who lives
few miles from Troy, made the pres
ent year, on twenty-nine acres of
land, fifteen ball's of cotton, eaeli
weighing over five hundred pounds

which were left over from the fifteen
bales. This was done under all the
unfavorable eircunistances of a bad
crop year

Woodford, cut the throat of Mrs.
Fannie Burnett and brained her sev
enteen year old daughter with a liglit-

brother. They were poor people and
last seen in his company. Their
dead bodies were found in tlie woods
by some hunters. The negro, who is
an ordained preacher, confessed, and
tlie incensed people took him from
