Heavy Losses.—Goorgia and Ala

There are many to whom tlie "so
tired” comes with such a dreary
wretchedness that exlsteuee is often
a sad burden, and in abject apathy
they live, bright to the outside world',
but frequently subject to the keenest

Washington, February 12.—Gen
eral Benjamin Butler lifts ready u reso
lution to declare that the House lias

of the Treasury Department. This

Sennte. General Butler is also pre
paring a silver speech, in which, ids
friends say, lie will make many new
points. Among others he will claim
that it is not true that the silver dollar
is worth only ninety-two cents. He
will demonstrate that the silver dollar
is worth ninety-two cents as com
pared with the gold dollar which is
alloyed, but that compared witli the
golil dollar which is not alloyed tlie
silver dollar is worth ninety-six cents,
and that intrinsically, therefore, tln-re
is only* four * cents difference
between tlie gold and silver
dollar. Butler will argue that
the silver dollar Is as much a
standard us the gold dollur is, hut
that paper is the real stardnrd of
American currency. The purpose of
Butler’s speech is said to be to rein-
gratiutc himself with the luhoring
classes of IiIh district, from whom he
is supposed to have become some
what alienated. He denies the truth

maintains that if such quantities of

hooks of Jay Gould’s Union Pacific
Railroad Company. It appears that
this railroad company lias expended
during the year over $100,000 for so-
called attorney fees. The items as
upon the books arc as follows: Sid
ney Dillon, President of the Compa
ny", $30,000; Hhelluburgcr und Wilson,
$0,000; C. H. Wilson, $0,500; It. F.
Ham, $3,000. Sidney Dillon is not a
lawyer. Sliellubargor and Wil
son’ are attorneys in tills city.
C. H. Wilson is a national
director in tlie road, and for
bidden hy law to receive fees. Mr.
Ham is tin agent of the Union Pacific
Railroad. All of these gentlemen
were here last winter working very
earnestly and vigorously for Mr.
Hayes. Sliellaharger uml Wilson
were attorneys for tlie Returning
Board before Dudley Field’s investi
gating committee, and it is supposed
Unit the sum paid them hy tlie Union
Pacific Hutlroud is their charge for
defending the Returning Board.
Dillon, Wilson and Hum have long
been conspicuous railroad lobbyists of
Washington.' The fact of the pay
ment of this enormous sum of money
for legal services will call for an in
vestigation.

rageous deportment, and to create a
sensation in Massachusetts hv a
narrative which the public there
have longed, yet dreaded, to hear.
The privacy of the illustrious dead is
to be iuquisitevcly invaded to ascer
tain whether in their lives they con
formed to the ten commandments.
Of course, these scandalous chronicles
will alternate between piquant truth
and gross libel.
