MORE OF ST. MARTIN’S LIES.
.Tn the Potter committee to-day, tlie
witness, Ht. Martin, was put through
a rigid course of examination l»y tlie
chairman. He admitted there were
Indictments pending against him in
Louisiana, one for shooting, and two
for cutting, hut thought as he was
but 24 years of age, he was getting
along very well and considered his
record a Very fair one. When at New
Orleans he told Stcnger witnesses
were being bought, and mentioned
as an instance that one Klaysee want
ed a thousand dollars to testify. After
lie (St. Martin) came to Washington
Maddox offered him a thousand dol
lars to withdraw his affidavit. Aok-

books to come in free through tlie
malls in pursuance of tlie postftt

have originated in the House. Tlie
bill also contains the Brazilian mail
steamship subsidy clause, and pro

THAT WONDERFUL DUEL.
Mark Twain writes for the Febru
ary number of the Atlantic Mtmtldy
an account of Ids participation in the
recent duel between Gumhctla and
Fourtou. When we beard of the out
break ill tlie Assembly be says tlinl
lie called on Gninbctla, wliom lie
found “steeped in a profound French
calm.” Mr. Twain, after being em
braced, began the conversation :
I said 1 supposed be would wish me
to net as his second, and lie said, “of
course." I said 1 must lie allowed to
act under a French mime, so Hint I
might be shielded from obloquy in
my country in case of fatal results.
Ho winched here, probably at tlie sug
gestion Hint dueling was not regarded
with respect in America. However,
lie agreed to my requirement. This
accounts for Hie fact that in all Hie
newspaper reports M. Ouinbcltu’s
second was nppnffently a French
man. First, we drew up m.v prin
cipal’s will. I insisted upon Ibis
and stuck to my poinl. 1 sgid I
never heard of a man in his right
mind going out to light a duel with
out first making his wRI. He said
lie never heard of a man in his right
mind doing anything of the kind.
When we bad finished Hie will he
wished to proceed to a choice of his
last words.” Ho wanted to know
then a train of assistants and mutes
on foot; and after these came plod
ding through the fog n long proces
sion of camp followers, police and
citizens generally. It was a noble
turnout, and would have made a fine
display if we had hud thinner
weather. -
Tho weather growing still opaque,
it was agreed between myself and the
other second that before giving Hie
fatal signal we should each deliver a
loud whoop, to enable tlie combat
ants to ascertain each other’s where
abouts. 1 now returned to my prin
cipal, who immediately stretched
forth liis hand and stud: “l am my
self ngain ; give me the weapon.”
I laid it, all lonely and forlorn, in
the centre of the vast solitude of his
palm, lie gazed at it and shuddered.
Amt still mournfully contemplating
it, lie murmured in a broken voice:
“Alas, it is not deatli l dread, but
mutilation.”
I lienrtoned him once more, mid
with such success that he presently
said: “Lot the tragedy begin. Stand
at my back; do not desert me in this
solemn hour, my friend.”
1 gave him lily promise. I now
assisted him to point his pistol to
wards tho spot where I judged liis
adversary to lie standing, and cau
tioned him to listen well and guide
himself by my fellow-second's wiioop.
Then I propped myself against M.
Giimhetta'sliack and raised a rousing
"Whoop-cc!” Tills wuh answered
how tlie following words, as a dying from out the far distance of Hie fog,
exclamation, struck me: ‘ and I immediately shouted:
1 die for my God, for my country,
for freedom of speech, for progress
and tlie universal brotherhood of
man!”
I objected that this would require
too lingering a deatli; it was a good
speech for a consumptive, but not
suited to tlio exigencies of (lie
field of honor. We wrangled over
a good many ante-mortem outbursts,
hut I finally got him to cut. liis obitu
ary down to this, which he copied
into liis memorandum book, propos
ing to get it by heart:
“I die that Franco may live,”
I said Hiat this remark seemed to
lack relevancy; but lie said relevancy
was a mailer of no consequence in
last words; wluit you wanted was
thrill.
I then wrote the following note and
carried it to M. Fourlou’s friend:
Sin: M. Gauibettu accepts 51.
Fourtou's challenge, ami authorizes
me to propose 1’lessis Piquet us the
place of meeting; to-morrow morn
ing at daybreak at the time; and axes
as the weapons. I am, sir, with great
respect, Mark- Twain.
M. Fourtou’s friend read this note,
and shuddered. Then lie turned to
me, and said, with a suggestion of
severity in liis tone:
"Have you considered, sir, what
would be the inevitable result of such
a meeting us this'.’”
“Well, for instance, what would it
be ?”
“Bloodshed !”
“Tliut’s about the size of it,” I said.
“Now, if it is a fair question, what
was your side proposing to shed
I had him there; lie saw lie lmd
made a blunder, so he hastened to ex
plain it away. He said lie lnul spoken
jestingly. Then lie added that lie
and liis principal would enjoy axes,
and indeed, prefer them, but such
weapons were barred by tlie French
oode, and so 1 must change my pro
posal.
After proposing Gatling guns,
rilles, navy pistols and Inick lials,
Air. Twain left tho choice of weapons
to the other second, who fished out of
his- vest pocket a couple of little
tilings which I carried to tlie light
and discovered to be pistols. They
were single-barreled and silver*
mounted, and very dainty and pretty.
I was not able to speak for emotion,
I silently hung one of them on my
watch chain, and returned the other.
My oom|>aiiion in crime now unrolled
a postage stamp containing several
cartridges and gave me one of them.
I asked If lie meant to signify by this
that our men were to lie allowed but
one shot apiece. He replied that the
French code permitted no more. I
then begged him lo goon and suggest
a distance, for my mind was growing
weak and confused under the strain
put upon it. Ho suggostedsixly-flve
yards. I nearly lost my patience. I
said ;
“Hixty-five yards with these in
struments? Fop gnus would lie dead
lier at fifty. Consider, my friend, you
and I are handed together to destroy
life, not make ii eternal.”
But withjuii my persiiations, all my
arguments, l was only able to get
him to reduce the distance to thirty-
five yards;. and even this concession
lie made with reluctance, and said
with a sigh:
“I wash my hands of this slaugh
ter; on your head lie it.”
There was nothing for me hut to
go homo to my own lion heart and
tell my humiliating story. When 1
entered, M. Gamlietta was laying liis
last lock of hair upon tlicaiiar. tie
spiling towards me, exclaiming:
“The weapon; the weapon ! Hoick!
wlmt is tlie weapon?”
"Tills!* and I displayed that silver
mounted tiling. lie caught imt one
glimpse of it, and then swooned
ponderously to tlie floor.
Wlien lie came too, lie said mourn
fully:
The unnatural calm to which I
“One—two—three—fire!
Two little sounds like spit! spit!
broke upon my ear, and in the same
instant I was crushed to the earth
under a mountain of flesh. Buried
as I was, I was still aide to catch a
faint accent from above, to tliisellbct:
“I (He for for perdition take
It, what is il I die for? Oh, yes—
France! Idlo that France may live!”

Erom the Kingston Freeman.]
Yesterday and to-day passengers
over the Hudson River Kail road wit
nessed a lively scene on tho river at
and near Poughkeepsie. Tlio wind
was brisk and a number of ice-yachts
were on the iee, which was in good
condition for the sailing of the novel
crafts. While a train was making its
ten minutes’ stop for refreshments at
tho Poughkeepsie station, which, by
the way, booses of one of tlie very
liest railroad restaurants in tlie coun
try, a native, well known to be up in
leu-yacht lore, was interviewed, and
he said tlie yachts lmd made a speed
of a mile a minute yesterday, and
some in former times had been known
to go faster than that; in fact in a
brisk gale, blowing from 70 to 80
miles an hour, an ice-boat hud been
known to outstrip tlie wind—that is,
ran out of the wind. Mentioning
tliis fact to a resident he spun this
yarn;
Many years ago Captain A. L.
Andorson owned a celebrated sail
yacht named (Ja/.elle, and one winter
Ids brother Nathan mounted tlie
(iazelle on runners, and many were
the jolly parties who enjoyed sails in
the < ia/.ollo that winter.’ P»eing at
Maugevties one day tlie wind came
out northeast and blew a gale,
ami when tlie Uazello came out
of Saugertics creek, homeward
hound, il was decided that Hank Van
Rromer, a noted North RiversUip|K*r
of those days, should hold a watch
over the boat from Saugertlea light
house to tlie one at the mouth of Uon-
dout creek.
Accordingly # the Gazelle made a
stretch up tlie river toward Malden
sons to come down and pass the
lighthouse on the 11 v, then squared
away the wind blowing a piper Just
over the quarter, and as ahe (lew past
Ktliberties light, “Nate,” who lmd
the tiller, sung out “time!” I was a
passenger on that sail, and the shores
appeared like two blue ribbons, the
muse made by tlie Hying boat was like
tlie hum of a large top, and at tunes,
when a heavier puli' of wind than
usual struck tin* boat, a long distance
would he run on one runner.
The ice was so smooth and strong
that the toiir-hor.-e mail couches be
tween Albany and New York used
the river as a thoroughfare all the*
way to Poughkeepsie, and when the
Gazelle rushed past tlie Roumlout
lighthouse and “Nate” again called
out “time!” Hank Van Kramer's
eyes were so lllled with tears that he
couldn’t see tin* figures on tin* watch
face, hut the bout was gradually
brought by tiie wind, lulled lip and
stopped, when the tears were swab
bed from Hank’s eyes, and time
noted was just 0 minutes since leav
ing Saugcrlics lighthouse, which, by
allowing two minutes for bringing
the boat by the wind lulling up and
getting it stopped, would make the
running time 7 minutes for the ten
miles.

Symptoms of a Diseased Lh’Ol’.
P AIN in tho right side, under tho
edge of the ribs, increases on pres
sure ; sometimes tlie pain is in the left
side; the patient is rarely able to lie
on the left side; sometimes tlie pain
is felt under the shoulder blade, and
it frequently extends to the top of the
shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken
for rheumatism in the arm. The stom
ach is affected witli loss of appetite
and sickness; the bowels in general
are costive, sometimes alternative with
lax; the head is troubled with pain,
accompanied with a dull, heavy sen
sation in the back part. There is gen
erally a considerable loss of memory,
accompanied with a painful sensation
of having left undone something which
ought to have been done. A slight,
dry cough is sometimes an attendant.
The patient complains of weariness
and debility; he is easily startled, his
feet are cold or burning, and he com
plains of a prickly sensation of the
skin; his spirits arc low; and although
he is satisfied that exercise would bit
beneficial to him, yet he can scarcely
summon up fortitude enough to try it.
In fact, he distrusts every remedy.
Several of the above symptoms attend
the disease, but cases have occurred
where few of them existed, yet exam
ination of the body, after death, has
shown the liver to have been exten
sively deranged.
AGUE AND FEVER.
Du. C. McLane’s Liver Pills, in
cases op Ague and Fever, whi n
taken with Quinine, are productive of
the most happy results. No better
cathartic can be used, preparatory to,
or after taking Quinine. Wc would
advise all who arc afflicted with litis
disease to give them a PAIR trial.
For all bilious derangements, and
as a simple purgative, they are uu-
cqualcd.
