THE WICKEDEST MAN IN MEMPHIS
From the Vicksburg Commercial.]
\ oh. stranger, you may well say so,
Such Mines iin last summer we hud,
in what tries Mie souls of mortals
An’ sorts out the good un' bud.
“Thar was some we had alius reconed
Among the whitest of men.
The salt of the earth, an’ so forth,
Proved mighty mean cattle then.
“An’ on the oilier liund. stranger.
Thar was low-down folks not few
i hat showed true grit and courage
As ever a man could do.
"Yer didn't kno.w Hank MoOuffy?
Well, ’tnnt much loss, thet’s clear!
‘The wickedest man in Memphis'
Was the name ho went by here.
“Gambler and drunkard and boss thief,
Spent most of Ins time In Jail,
He was tarred and leathered In Vicksburg
And rode out of town on a rail.
“Now, you’d have thought such a fellow
Would have from the Yellow Death
Got right up nml dusted
At tho whiff of his diurnal bregth.
“Not. caring who might suffer ;
“Thar was many ns shirked their duty,
To save their worthless lives,
Thar was some as left tlmr children,
And some us shook their wives.
“But llni;k, did he net the coward ?
Was he one of them that slid
As quick as their legs could take them ?
Yes, stranger—you bet he did !”
A (TMTEK CITY COCKTAIL.
Liquor That Took Hold Quirk asd
Held on Lonf.
Chicago Tribune.]
Tact ami politeness obviate many
(lifttoulttes. A returned miner from
the Black Hills arrived in town yes
terday, and went to a saloon and
asked for some of the best whiskey
in the house, and when it was served
to him spat it out with unutterable
loathing, and said, “I called, for
whiskey, young man, mobile you
didn’t hear me?” The barkeeper
said that lie lmd heard him, and that
lie lmd given him whiskey. The
gentleman from Deadwoatl proeeded
with more deadly calmness, though
his hand Instinctively sought his ldp
pocket. “I called for the best whis
key iu tlie house, young man ; mebbe
you did not catch the full significance
of my language?” Now, many an
other barkeeper under similar cir
cumstances would have resented the
insinuation as to tiis litjuor by pour
ing It into tiie sink, and saying,
“You don’t know good whiskey
when you see it,” or words to that
effect, or have offered the man
live hundred dollars if he oould find
as good whiskey as tliat.any where on
the footstool, or In some other manner
not herein specified have led the man
from the Black Hills to draw ids re
volver or hurl a chair through the
mirror. But tills barkeeper was quite
another sort, so he said, kindly: “I
beg your pardon, Captain ; so many
people come round that don’t know
what whiskey is, hut you knew the
difference.” So lie urbanely but hur
riedly mixed in a bottle some pleo-
hol, kept for cleaning the mirror, and
spirits of turpentine nnd Jamaica
ginger, nnd Perry Davis’ painkiller,
and when the stranger said “Yes” in
reply to Ids question whether ho
liked some hitters in it, shook half a
gill of pepper snupe into a tumbler
ami pushed the bottle towards him.
The stranger filled a heaping tum
blerful nnd passed it off, and when
he hud recovered Ids breath suld to
the barkeeper, “Young man, that’s
the whiskey. I haven’t tasted noth
ing like that since I left Custer City
two weeks ago to-day. That’s real
genuine liquor, kinder a cross be
tween a circular saw and a wild eat.
That takes hold qulok ami holds on
long. Just you go to Deadwood and
open n saloon with that whiskey,
md you might charge an ounce a
glass for It and people wouldn’t kick.
Solong; take tills ns a remembrance
of me,” and, pressing an $8()0 nugget
upon the barkeeper, lie was gone.

cold, and the lire struggling along
helplessly like a poor man with a
large family. He spoke to the hoy
and told him lie must be u little
brisker, and not let it happen again
or lie would have to shake him up.
The next day the same aspect was
presented, and tlie room was as cold
as a Pres'yterian prayer-meeting in
Febiuary while the boy was scared
almost out of liis Sundny-scliool

“Well, tliis is a pretty go,” said
Geu. Bhattuc, coming in; “didn’t I
tell you to have this room warm when
I got down ?”
"Yes, sir,” whimpered Louie.
"Well, why don’t you have it so?”
“I don't know, sir.”
“Now listen to me. I’ll give you
