To-day is St. Valentine’s day. All will be
going to the postofflec. Soiru* will receive
tender messages and will make resolutions

•nder . It Is a day filled with pleasure Tor
ie young, and has been observed for cen
turies. Saint Valentine, according to some
ecclesiastical writers, was a bishop; accord
ing to others a presbyter, who was beheaded
Home In the reign of Emperor Claudius
(270), and was early oanonised. Wheatley
says that St Valentine was a man of most
admirable parts, and so famous for his love
and charity, that the custom of choosing
valentines upon his festival (walch is still
practiced) took its rise from thence. Others
derived the custom from birds being sup
posed to select their mates on this day;
others from a practice prevalent in ancient
Homo at the festival of the Luplrcalla, din
ing the month of February, when among
other ceremonies, the names
young ladles were placed In a box, from
which they were taken by young men, as
chance directed. The pastors of the early
Ihurch, finding It impossible to extirpate
this pagan ceremony, changed its form. It
was the custom,on the eveof February 14th,
St Valentine's Day, to have the names of a
seloct number of one sex put Into some ves
sel by an equal number of the other, and
thereupon every one drew a name, which,
for the lime being, was called his or her
Valentine. The custom of choosing valen
tines existed very early. Presents in early
days of gloves, garters and jewelry were
common as valentines.

Some days ago a man by the name of
Hanks was before Mayor Wilkins for va
grancy. He was sentenced to thirty days
on the chain gang. Several parties stand
ing near seemed to think the man not so

his release. No action, however, was then
tnki.ii In the matter, and the unfortunate
fiiim was placed among the other depreda

next day Alderman L G Scheu-slor,
is one of the Streot Committee,
went to upper Jackson street, where
the gang was at wprk, and began
talking with Mr OTry, the overseer. Dur
ing the conversation Mr OTry remarked
this man Hanks was either a Mason or Odd
Fellow, as he had been saying something

hearing tills, Mr Sehuessler requested per-
Ivslon to talk with the inaiR which was
granted, and alter a few words Mr “ehuess-

Fellow. He Immediately wrote out a
petition to Mayor Wilkins for Hanks’
release, which was signed by a number of
the members of the Lodge. The Mayor
granted It, and the poor felbrw was liber
ated. It was Indeed a touching sight to see
the grateful fellow when the order arrived.
He rail to Mr S, and throwing Ills arms
about him said, “You did this, God bless
you.” MrS then carried him In a hack to
a hotel, gave him supper, lodging and
break fast, and yesterday paid bis faro to
Atlanta, besides giving him some pocket
change.
When this man received his sentence his
eyes were filled ^Ith tears, and with his
head bowed he remained some minutes per
fectly motionless, which made the crowd
sympathize with him. *

The dining hall of the Perry House was
crowded to Its utmost capacity last night.
The tables were as busy as bees, and those

All the ladlse weredoing a good business,
especially the refreshment tables. The
principle attraction was In tho tableau room.
It wus the rendition of the drama
“A ROUGH DIAMOND.”
Every seat was taken, while many were
standing. The play has been often render
ed by our amateurs, but never better than
last night.
Miss Sallie Martin, as Margery, was heart
ily npplnuded, and deservedly so, for we
have never seen the part played better by
professionals of the first class. As an ama
teur Miss Sallie Is a star. • #
Mr T 8 Coart, as Cousin Joe, won the nd’

seems perfcotly at ease on the Btage, and
goes through without the slightest trouble
or hesitation.
Mr CH Madden and Miss Susie Swift,
Lady Pate and son, did very well, and came

Mr Goode Fleming, as Sir William Evi

Blenheim, are also deserving of praise*
They are among our best amateurs.
Miss Boody Barnett acted the part of Lucy
In a becoming manner.
RACK WITH THE CROWD.
After the performance had concluded the
audience returned to the festival room, and
this addition made ninny portions almost
ini passable.
The fortune teller from “Gypsey Land”
was on hand with n pack of cards, and for
a small sum allowed all r to learn of their

When such a practice Is kept up, theorehnrd

have small grain sown In your orchard,
either cut It down and feed It to stock before
