murdered on Monday near Wavnes-

—Mr Francis Weeks, who lived near

woods near bis house last Friday. He
had been in delicate health for some
time.
—Hon Daniel Hoiulcrson, of Irwin
county, is dead. He represented
Worth county in, tho Legislature ten
or twelvo yours, was a good Confede
rate soldier, and till several positions
of trust.
—Dr Thos Raines, formerly of Co
lumbus, has been appointed physician
to tho penitentiary. His duty is to re
ceive reports of the health of tho con
victs, and look after the sanitary regu
lations of each camp.
—An illicit still has boon unearthed
and destroyed in Spalding countv. It
was located in a collar of a residence,
atul the smoko from tho same was con
ducted to tho kitchen chimney over
head, which was pro\ ided with a false
back for its passage.
—The Albany library lias at last been
thrown open to the public. Tho
nucleus or tho library is a handsome
donation of tiofl volumes bv that very
public-spirited citizen, Col L E Welsh.

by the citizens of Savannah in
memory of Dr R I) Arnold
arrived by the steamer City of
Columbus on Saturday, also portions
of the monument for C C Casey, Esq.,
to bo placed over the grave of his wife

—Mr Halman, formerly of Colum
bus, owns and manages in Atlanta ono
of the most important manufacturing
enterprises in Georgia. He works
about 140 inui per day, atul makes in
one item of plows alone over 0.000
points per day. His enterprise is ably
managed and is flourishing.
—Spalding county paid into the
county treasury last yoar in cash over
f400. ' Its estimated saving to the
county in jail fees is $2,000. The esti
mated saving to tho county in superior
oourt costs and expenses by trying and
disposing of eighty criminal cases in
tho countv oourt during the year 1H78
is fl,200.
—Samples of fertilizers are daily sent
to the department of agriculture by
inspectors. A much larger number of
samples has been received up to dale
than is usual at this season. Tills is
regarded as an evidence of a compro
mise botwofm tho farmers and the fer
tilizer manufacturers. Tt is reported
that a general reduction in prices will
take place and tpmls in this department
will soon be fully roviyod.
—Walter II Lynch, imprisoned for
default of $25,000 placed in his charge
as messenger of the Southern Express
Company, was, on Monday, brought
before Judge Snead on a writ of habeas
corpus, and argument commenced on
tho wrif by attorney’s pro and con.
Mr Lynch’ is represented bv H Clay
Foster, who is hrsLDhI by Davenport
Jackson; and the Express Company is
represented by Frank II. Miller and
John S & W T Davidson. Case not de
cided when the lust Xetrs was pub
lished.
—From tho Monroe Advertiser we
learn that Hon S F Smith, who repre
sents Butts county in the Legislature,
has announced that bo will, at the July
session, introduces bill to extend the
road to Atlanta. lie claims that this
will not bo the State aiding a railroad,
but tho State building a railroal. ITo
urges that as the road now exi-da, it is
not valuable, because its rival, the
Central Railroad, owns the connecting
line between Atlanta and Macon, and
therefore is in a position to control
freights betweoh the West and South
ern and Southwest Georgia.
—Mr Roland Lvon, of Macon, while
under the In 11-once of liquor Monday
evening, placed a pistol to his breast
and fired. The Telegraph ami Messcn-
ger says: “Tho bullet penetrated bis
body about an Inch from tho loft nip
ple, a little above, and was out out of
ni* back about an inch from tho edge
of his shoulder blade. The path of the

lung, narrowly escaping the heart. He
had been in his father’s room about

colored man in IluiUsvillo has !>een
jealous of Ids wife. In a fit of rage
Monday lie deliberate!y drew a pistol
and shot her, but not fatally. Ho fled,
but stealthily returned to see if she
if she was dead ; finding her stil alive,
l»g shot her again. To make
sure of the work, the murderer soizod
a razor and drew it across the woman’s
throat, almost severing tho head from
the body. Tho bloat} splrtod on tho
floor ancl against tho. walls, making a

Irving then drew the razor across his
own throat and fell beside his wife,
