died) that lie would recover, but in about
ilnutcs he expired. It Is supposed
to have been a stroke of apoplexy that
caused his death.
General Chilton was a Virginian by birth,
a graduate of West Point, a captain In tlie
Mexican war, and In the late war was Adju
tant General and chief of stair of General

There was an entertainment at Bethany
Baptist Church, near Goodman's Cross
Roads, seven miles north of Hamilton. A
largo crowd was there and all seemed to
enjoy themselves. One of the most Inter
esting features of the occasion was an auo-

did some spirited bidding against the old
men, ami paid as high as 81.95 for a young
ludy. The net proceeds are 880, and will go

Tho fall *nd early winter season is
the harvest time of backing coughs
and debilitating forms of Catarrh, just
as the later spring is the seed time of
malarial fevers. To know a certain
cure of tho one, and a preventive of tho
other, is to have within our reach the
most inestimable blessing of tho pe
riod. We do know of them, for these
really marvelous properties are com
bined in Scott’s Emulsion of Pure
Cod Liver Oil with tho Hypopiioh-
piiitks of Lime and Soda.
There is no form of physical waste
and prostrated vitality that a bountiful
use of tho Emulsion, will not change to
glowing health and full life and vigor,
and then it is not a disagreeable medi

Mayor—
Whence came thou Two Ball-Kane,
Thou stalwart son of a Scot;
If It mockery or my purse—
That calls tliee hither,
Pray thee what?
(Tuball swoons)
Speak, bold robber, speak—
Or this Instant—I swear
By the stars above me,
And thy disheveled hair—
That I will send thee,
Orphan, outcast that thou art,
Into perdition—and—
Watch thy carcass.
Foul robber part—
Company with thy rotten form,
In the deep depths of hell,
Where countless millions—luckless born
Tramps like thee—doth dwell.
Two Ball revives
Four smolliu bottles.
Yer Honor I spliake, I am as threw an
Irishman as was me father, but yes mls-
tliake me. I am a low comedy acthur—
while yer revorence rides a high boss, begad,
I takes it a foot.
The curtain fell on Charlie Ileyman.
GLENN VILLE.
And now comes the sad Intelligence that
makes mourning in the land. The stalwart
yeomanry of Glonnville have organized a
vigorous campaign agulnst the "Amen’
brotherhood, and swear by the blue blood
within them that tho "little brown Jug”
shall prove an Important factor in tho next
election. We suggest, boys, that you send
the Doctor back again to Montgomery
envoy extraordinary, with a new set of
credentials and a little heavier exchequer;
we are told that he exhausted the appropri
ation on the Russell delegation, and in con
sequence they got the thing a little mixed.
Tho Dale, Pike, Coffee and Geneva delega
tions thought the doctor was a chiropodist,
and were constantly shoving bunions, corns
and Ingrowing nails at him, and were led
to believe the doctor was trying to lobby a
a bill through to enable him to practice
within two miles of Glennvllle Academy
without a license.
ACCIDENT.
/ The little son of Mr I K McMakin
had tho misfortune a day or two ago
to have his leg broken in two places
by falling In front of a heavily loaded
wagon which he was driving. The attend
ing physician pronounces the fracture as
very serious. We extend our sympathy.
MULES.
About fifty mules have been sold in our
community recently, and the effort on part
of our farmers to make a crop isoverwhclm-
lngly commendable, evidencing that there’s
life In the old land yet.
SOUTHWARD HO.
Thero is every evidence that the mind of
the Western man is turned (Southward and
ere long who knows but what we may have
right here in our midst a good colony ? Wo
know of one gentleman coining out from
Indiana and If lie likes the country and sur
roundings after a ten months’ residence
among us ho will make this hls permanent
home, when some twenty families will fol

come among us to help us build up, etc.

FROM BILL NOTWIIIPPED TO PAIT.
Glennville, Ala., Feb. 14,1879.
Friend Fait: It Is not true that so many
of our citizens committed suicide, but I tell
you some of us feel mighty feeble and are
skeored to open our mouths. I wish you
could instill bojoq of your Hatchechubbeo
vim and pluck into our body politic. They
would have a hard road to travel, that could
bulldoze tho Hatchechubbians as wc have
been bulldozed. "All honor to tho men that
daro assert their rights, and daring, do
maintain them.'
My friend Palt, you were mistaken in say
ing that the General Assembly refused to
abolish tho law, tho repeal of which we pe
titioned for. No, sir, It was a eulver-t in
the temperance committee that the bill
could not pass over. How could the General
Assembly, under our form of government,
refuse to grant the petition of a majority of
good citizens, men of property, some of
whom are the heaviest tax-payers In the
place, had our petition been properly
presented to them and defended by our
Representatives? Thero is where the fault
lay and not with the General Assembly.
Between you and I and the broom-stick,
Palt, the Martin is a mighty bird to whip
the hawk, but ns sure as you aro born he
didn’t fight for our chickens. In tho an
nals of legislation, have you ever known o
bill presented by a majority of the substan
tial men of tho place, who, believing that a
law In force, was detrimental to their inter
est, and ought to be repealed, and whose
Representatives were In favor of It. to be
defeated? No, sir; it was the committee on
temperance and not the General Assembly
that killed the bill Now may I ask you
what right had that committee to report
adversely to a bill that a majority of the
citizens were In favor of? None In the
world. They did it because a few of the!
friends, here, did uot want the bill to pass.
And ’.this is Alabama Democracy. Nev
mind, the mills of the gods grind slowly
and try again is a very useful maxim, and
when we do try again, you had better be.
lieve wo will put on steam enough to ride
over every culvert or well, be the coldwoli
or hotwell, thaj. come in our way.
And the preach or'# horse got sink ami the
blessed water cured him. Homo ono in the
crowd suggested whiskey and asafictide,
but Lor’bless your soul, it was as a stench
In life nostrels of the righteous, oven for a
horse. Now Palt, If your horse or mine got
sick ho would not get well to save our lives
uuloss we drenched him with whiskey, so
much for being of tho unrogenerutud.
Your friend and well wlsl.pr,
Bill Nqtwuipdkd.
P S—Lot us hear from you again on tho
subject of our defunct William' or Bill for
short. With kind regards for the whole
