Up to this time the army had made at
least twenty or twen-flve miles, and had
seen nor hea r d nothing of Big Charley.
Another move was made for the sound o
the whistle. In twenty minutes the army
were hemmed In again by water. At least
ten more miles were tramped before they
o.ime la halting distance of the boat, but
when they did you would have shed buck
ets of tears, to hear, the rejoicing.*
The word came from tbe boat, “W# have
Jouud him,” and every man seemed to for
get his own troubles and express their Joys,
for Big Charley’s recovery. The men of the
army, as tired and worn out as Ihey were,
rained a song that oould be beard at Baln-
brklge, a distance of at least 25 or 30 miles.
Tbs boat en her wa7 out of Flint, had
sighted a light deep Into the swamp, Just

The small boat was sent out through the
trees aud cane brake to are what it meant.
T he wen were very cautious and made as
little noise as possible, and before they
conld see whet ter it was man or beast, a
voice was heard to u ter:
“In the sweetbye and bye.
Nearer my steamboat to thee;
And ths half shall never be told.”
They knew it whs Big Charley, and shov
ed in and took him out of the bull rushes.
Big t'harley had rambled as far an be oould
gc, and having some matches, by hard
work had managed to kindle two fires—said
his little prayer of, “Lord I give myself unto
thee,” and turned in. The nauslo of the
tier ness would not allow sleep, to relieve his
troubles, and as the small boat neared his
camp, he was given away to grief, as stated
above. Big Charley had had nothing to eat
dinner, aud the spoils of his boat was
the oontents of bis commltKary department
(a Jay, blue and red bird), whloh he said
was saving for breakfast, If he lived. Big
Charley was found, and all haads being
happy the boat was ag*ln headed lor Baln-

In the year 1873, there were two negro
prit-ouerB confined in the Jail of
ibis county, who were very badly
afflicted with that loathsome dis
ease, Syphilis. In my official ca-
aclty as Ordinary, I employed Capt. C. T.

them, under a contract, “nocure, no pay.
He administered to them his now Justly
celebrated Syphilitic Specific, and In a few
