A total auapenaion of building
operations is throateued in No
if the Ntrlkoa of workmen eugagovl in
tlto building trades are pushed much
further. One architect on Saturday
countermanded orders for five apart
ment houses, the aggregate coat of
which would have been about $<>00,000,
the higher prices demanded for labor,
togetlier with the advance in building
material, rendering it impossible to do
the work at anything like a profit.
This is not by any means a solitary
case. There is a point where the con
sideration of cost summarily decides
the question of Loginning or continu
ing enterprises of tins character, in
dependently of other intluenees, ami
from that decision there ia no appeal,
and it is thought this point is nearly
reached.

The Mahone party in Virginia have

this of their own free will, hut in

There are few people who do not
know that Mahone will serve any
lministration which will give him
hia pay in patronage. It will not
astonish any one who knowa this
political renegade to sec him, inline-
liately after the inauguration of the
democratic president in 18H-1, hob up
renely with hie* little pap-hoat, in
sisting that he has been a democrat
all the time. He will then endeavor
to show that he only entered into a
nominal alliance with the repub

All that would have been necessary

There has been considerable spec
illation as to the high prices of corn
meat and nuts. ’They have been ad
vancing, ami have commanded unu
anally high prices, as will lie seen I
the daily report of the produce inn
ket. A few weeks ago it was thought
that large operators were bringing
about a corner In meat amt grain, hut
it was soon found that this was not
the case. In talking with some o
our prominent brokers yesterday
they expressed the opinion that the
rise 1h perfectly legitimate, and it l»
due to the fact that the supply Is short

over Jefferson’s grave. A cotempor
ary says that at tirst blush this look
as if a republican congress had been
really actuated by a desire to do
honor to the memory of that great
man. Upon rellection we recall the
fact that when it comes to voting
away money, the republican congress
!*» on hand every time. Apropos to
tin* subject are a few words of Mr.
Wayne MaeVeagh; “the republican
are prostituting the national treasury
to enable h ccitaln portion of thepeo
pie of Virginia to force another por
tion to repudiate her debt. If we
could charge that crime upon the
party responsible for the rebellion,
we could charge it upon the bourbon
democracy, it would be some relief.
Hut it is being done by tiie party
which masquerades under tiie name
of Abraham Lincoln.”
The republican papers of Albany
New York, are exceedingly indignant
that a democratic mayor has been
elected in that city. They arc
rious as to protest against his inaugu
ration, and say he is an usurper. The
cause, and the only cause of the
publican defeat, was they didn't get
votes enough to elect, but It is the re
publican |H>llcy not to go behind the
returns—in a born.

NVk have a strong suspicion that
Chicago will surprise the Illinois

\ I'd i tor: The approaching
ral conference seems to he a very
suggestive event. The papera, seen
lnr and religious, abound with state
ments, eonjeetures, uud prophecies
about what will he done, what is
likely to he done, and what ought to
he done. All these deliverances are
without authority or knowledge, and,
in my judgment, are wide of the
mark, and very misleading. The in
troduction by anybody of any vexa
tious. agitating topic will he very
unwise, ami will involve great waste
of time without any compensating
benefit. The church is quiet every

our people
The question of the reunion of
Methodism, north and south, is not

nor is there any competent authority
in the premises before the northern
general conference. Irresponsible in
vitations, tin* published opinions and

We must respect ourselves, and hide
our time. In the meanwhile, I think
I speak advisedly, when I say the
common sentiment of our people is
that organic union is neither practi
cable nor desirable. Let us have
peace by Jetting disturbing questions
alone.
The chief business of the occasion

more effective working of our mis
sionary and Humlav-school plans.
It seems to me that all needed work
can he promptly disposed of. The
session may lie, and ought to be,
short one. Private pressing business
will demand the presence of the lay
members at home, presiding elders
will lie needed on their districts, col-
lege presidents and professors ought

sentence,” be says, ‘ involved liniuedv
ate dismissal from the army and disa
bility to hold office thereafter. The
dismissal is an accomplished fact, and
ho far the sentence Ih completely exe
cuted. The disability is a continuing
punishment, and in regard to that the
sentence is being executed. Tiie latter
may be remitted by the exercise ot (he

a pardon would not restore the appli

could only be done by an appointment
under special authority from congress."
A copy of the opinion has been sent to
