Judge Underwood began to charge the
iury was it discovered that the hill of
indictment against the negro charged
him with only the offense of an assault,
which is a misdemeanor and not a
felony.”
—Butler Herald: One of the largest
alligators that has ever been seen on
Flint river was killed a few days ago
by Messrs. A. O. Allen and Thomas
Beeland, on the Allen plantation in
this county, which was ten feet in
length. Upon examination after being
killed it was found that tho alligator
had swallowed whole with the excep
tion of its feet and legs, a small dog
belonging to Mr, Beeland, which bad
been missing for three days. There
were also found in the outrails of the
alligator a large rock, a lightwood knot
and several sticks.
Berrien County News: “The wool
crop promises to he much larger this
year than usual. Owing to the mild
winter the mortality of ihe sheep was
very light, ami the wool is better in
quality and greater in quantity. The
lumhs have also increased a hundred
per cent, as compared with former
years. A few years ago wo heard a
farmer remark that if we could have a
few more mild winters like tho one just
passed the whole wiregrass country
would ho covered with sheep. The
lambs aro now being hunted up in tho
woods and marked. Sheep aro now
selling at from $2.60 to §:i per head and
jatlier hard to buy at that.

ington, Andrew Jackson and Daniel
Wobator—all of African descent.
—It is estimated that tho farmers of
Pike county have been darnagod thirty
thousand dollars from the effects of
storms, cyclones, etc,, tho present
year.
—The commissioner’s court of Bar
hour county has revoked tho order al
lowing the county health oflicor a sal
ary of one thousand dollars. No salary
is now providod, which Is about what

raided in Jackson county last Saturday
about seventeen miles in a southeaster

ored girl named “Ochie,” of about 17
years of age, out of a store in Harris

person in passing a lonely spot below

gating tho matter found Ochie lying
there, shot through the head. The fact
was at once reported at the stores, and
a crowd soon col looted,’and some of the

trace ol tho devilish perpetrator of the
foul deed. Ochie remained in a semi

there who hear tho name of Johnson,
and they woro arrested, but easily
proved their innocence, and tho cow
ardly crime remains wrapped in mys
tery. At last accounts tho girl was not
dead, and there was a hare possibility
that she might recover.

cess of preserving meat has been in
troduced in England, in which, in
stead of steeping the carcass in an an
tiseptic, the preservative chemical,
boracic acid, is introduced into the
live animal, and by the action of the
heart is sent through the blood ves
sels and capillaries into every part of
the body. The animal is first stun
ned, whereupon its left Jugular vein
is laid hare and the liquid injected,
after which it takes about two min
utes for it to go through tho whole
vascular system. Meat treated in
this way ean be preserved at ordinary
summer temperature for five or six
weeks.

ty writes; Some weeks ago Jim Gobi's
little son was bitten by a mad dog, and
I saw him taking the boy to a “mad
stone,” in Marion county. Since that
time George Wilson’s dog, in a lit of
hydrophobia, or something simi
lar, hit Wilson’s wife, and
a calf in the pen. Mrs Wilson
was carried to the “mad stone.” A
horse, belonging to Ross Sugg, was
bitten about the same time, and was
carried to the stone. The calf has since
gone mad and grew so violent that it
was killed. Mrs. W. and the horse
have escaped so far. Mrs. Halo’s dog
became violeutlaud bit one of her chil
dren, then ran off and Lit a child in tho
! neighborhood, hit a number of dogs,
hogs and other animals, then returned
home and made a desperate attack on
1 another child, which he would have
| killed if lie had not been choked off
i and dispatched. Hydrophobia lias not

of this dog’s dangerous work. There
