The name was taken from the char
acter of the stc|>s. It is danced ou
siX'eight time, aud partakes of the
character of the gallop aud ma/.ouka
combined. That it is destined lo be
popular is evidenced by the great tie-

for the music aud description
of the dance. The novelties in
square dances are the Natioual
Guard aud Lawn Tennis quadrilles.
Tlie former is composed of squares
and circles, aud is very much ou the
style of military dances in general.
The live tigures are dedicated to the
Natioual Guard—north, south, east

Tub Hangman’s Tariff.—Some
body prowling through the govern
ment archives at Dainstadt has fouud
the authorized tariff of a public exe
cutioner of the fourteenth century,
from which it appears that the fee
for boiling a criminal in oil
was tweuty-four llorius; for
burning him alive, fourteen tlo-
rlns; while for haugiug him ten
llorius was adjudged quite enough to
recompense the ketch of the day for
his trouble. To break a man ou the
wheel would cosisix llorius, aud such
trilling affairs as brauding him on
the shoulder or forehead or cutting
off his nose and ears were done with
elegance and precision at five llorius
a head.
We offer the most complete line of
Wool Dress Fabrics known—in all the
new shades—embracing IShoodahs,
Jerseys aud Cashmeres. The shades
are perfect, the prices right,
