Half pound coin rocks, spotted all
though with gold, have been picked up
on Chestatee river, some lour miles

—Macon Telegraph: There is a gf n«

rotting of sweet potatoes. We have
known them to be successfully kept
the year round by hilling them in an
open log house, well covered over head.

be used in covering them, with such a
thick ness of dirt as will keep them from
freezing in cold weather.
—The first exposition of the Agricul
tural Association of Burke county will
take place at Waynesboro, ou the
grounds of the association, on the tub,
7th, 8:h and 9th days of December, aud
the committee of arrangements have
made every preparation for a successful
exposition. The railroads will soli
lick jib at two cents per mile, and ie-
turn free of charge stock or articles
exhibited. Hon. C. O. Jones will de
liver the fiist aunual address before the
association on the 0th, and Prof. H. C
White, of the State University, will
lecture on an agricultural subject on
the 7-h.

headed man by the name of Dowdy has

was a fourteen year old girl, the
daughter ol Captain Ragsdale. Last
week he closed his school, induced*

for South Carolina. Mr. Ragsdale fol
lowed on the next train and succeed d
in reclaiming his daughter aud bring
ing her homo betore any harm was

—Montezuma Weekly'. “On last Sat
urday morning cur town was thrown
into excitement by the rumor that at
the instigation of Mr. J. N. lL.ser, one
ol his clerks. Mr. Charles Ventress had
been arrested under the suspicion of
confiscating 91,100 to his own use. The
rumor was found to be true, and that
wLether Mr. Ventress was guilty or
iuuoceut, he was iu trouble, ftlr. It >s-
ser claims that at one time he missed
9300, at another 9800, aud that suspi
cion rested ou Mr. Ventress. The
olerk of the superior court fixed his
bond at $3,800, which was promptly
g.ven, and the accused set at liberty.”

Charlie Stewart, had about fifteen bales

The cotton, we understand, was in an
out-house, and some one went into the
house alter dark, with a lamp or light
ed pine knot iu hand, from which the
cotton was accidentally fired.
—Montgomery Advertiser: The
failure of A. Moog <ft Co , wholesale
grocers and liquor dealers, on Com
merce street, has been anticipated for
two or three days, and was announce d
yesterday morning. The goods were
attached by parties representing the
creditors. The assets and liabilities
are not definitely known, but the lat
ter, it is stated, amount to about $00,-
000. This is the second failuro of this
fi in.
—In Montgomery the other day a
shooting aflray occurred between Mr.
Ed Grant, who lives near the city, ami
Mr. Sloan Armstrong, late deputy
warden of the peuiteu iary, yesterday
morning. The parties engaged in the
shooting were arrested and arraigned
before the recorder, who imposed a fine
of $100 each for violating the ciiy or
dinance, and held Mr. Armstrong to
bail in the 0 um of $500 lo appear at the
next term of the city court.
—The teat of the electric light in
Montgomery proved very satisfactory.
The lights were all steady, brilliant
and beautiful and there was no room
todoupt its perfect success. At Rice’s
clothiDg store, lor instance, it was so
strong that colors could be readily
distinguished. The wires li8vo been
introduced into nineteen buildings,
and by the middle of the coming week
number will be increased to twenty-
seven andperhans more.
—Mobile Register: An accident hap
pened yesterday morning in the Cher
okee Cotton Mills, at the corner of Ca
nal aud Water streets, by which a
young woman, Ellen Conley, met her
death. It seems that owing to the
heavy rains of Sunday the fuel of the
mill was so damp that seme difficulty
,._en the hands
came they fouud leisure and went Into
an nnoocunled room on the third floor
to atnuse themselves, as they have fre
quently done in the pest. After spend
ing sometime in games, dancing, etc.,
as girls are known to be fond of doing,
the assembly heard the machinery In

the hurry nnd excitement Miss Ellen
Conley tripped when near the top of
tho stairs aud fell to the bottom. The
sufferer was picked up unconscious.
Mr. Irwin, proprietor of the mill, pro
cured a carriage and scut her to her
home on the west side of Marine, be
tween Savannah and Augusta streets.
After lingering throughout tbeday, the
shook proved to be iusurportable. and
at a late hour iu the afternoon death in
tervened.
A Stalwart Old Escar.
One of tho toughest old adversaries

Rival Gas Companies. — The
Equitable Gas Company of New York
has offered to light the street lamps
and public buildings of that oily for
$16.50 per lamp, which is from one
dollar up less per lamp than is now
paid. It is proposed to supply hydro
gen gas of 25*candle power, which
can be increased to 40. It will be sup
plied to the public at $2 per 1,000 feet,
aud iu one year or two a reduced rate
is promised.
