The Chronicle's lolegrupbic neat hern

There has been rain in the greater portion
ol the south the past week, and In most
sections there havo been kilting frosts, but
the rain has not In general been heavy,
aud the fro >ts are not too lute lo do harm.
O’herwlseconditions have been favorable,

The contest now peuding in Lou
isiana lietweeu Kellogg atul Acklio,
fora seat in congress, is bringing
down some very severe criticisms
upon the head ol Kellogg by the re
publican press. We fiml the Phila
delphia Inquirev saying that Mr.
Kellogg has been a conspicuous fig
ure before the public ever since the
close of the rebellion, and sucli ex
hibition as he lias made of himself
has not elevated him in the public
esteem or confidence. He is com
monly recognized as one of the worst
of those unscrupulous politicians who
created aud kept alive the Louisiana
political scandal during Grant’s ad
ministration. He is uot a pleasant
person to contemplate iu the charac
ter of a national lawmaker, but
neither is the volatile Mr. Acklin.
If a hoard of arbitration, composed
of honorable, conscientious gentle
men, should he culled upou to declure
which of tho twain is the most unfit
to take a seat iu congress, it would
be sorely troubled, for Kellogg
is probably as unfit a man as could
be named for sucli a positiou.” The
Inquirer, however, does not favor
Ackleu, whom it says is not much
better than Kellogg.
