_—Conyers Weekly : Mr. Ed Peek
and MIsa Neila Rice, both of Rack-
dale, were clandestinely married on
last Sunday morning. Miss Rice was
probably tbe prettiest young lady in
the county,
—Henry County Weekly: Judge
Dickon owns the largest and lattes;
shote for its age that we ever saw. It
is only seven months old, weighs 1(50
pounds, and is so fat that it wuiks
pigeon toed.
—Advertiserand Appeal: “At a wa
termelon cutting in Brooks this season,
of champion melons, the largest, only
went up to from forty to forty-live
pounds. Glynn’s largest, so far as
heard from, reached fifty*five, and yet
Southwest Georgia olaims to have bet
ter soil than the seacoast.”
—Advertiser and Appeal: The doc
tors are sadly in need of employment
in this city. A few chronic cases seem
to be about all they have a chance to
physio. Well, they are all clever iron-
tlemeu, but we don’t lind it in our heart
to grieve over their misfortune. What
is their loss is our gain.
—Calhoun county Courier: Tbe leg
islature has passed a bill by which
rascals are allowed the privilege of
usiDg guano and not paying for it.
The effect will bo that only good, hon
orable and honest farmers, and those
who have the cash to pay for it, will
use it. Tbere will not be one ton sold
next season, for‘three last This bill
massed by a bare constitutional wa-
, ority.
—Captain W H Morgan reports that
the oaterpillars are on tbe plantations
bordering the Flint on the Dooly sido.
He thinks that they cannot do much
harm to the old crop In thirty days, and
by that time it will be mnile, but the
top crop will suffer very much. This
opinion is agreed to by those wbo have
watched tbe movement of the wortn.&
—Jeff. Sparks, who is charged with
having killed two negroes near Towns,
in Tel lair county, some six or eight
months since, and who Is now in
Dodgejail awaiting tbe sitting of Tel
fair superior court, is trying to play
crazy. This is an old dodge, and one
that, in tbe past, baa been very success
ful in cheating the gallows throughout
the state.
—Elbert Head and Jas. Ellis, both
colored, have b ,j en drawn to serve as
lurors at the October term of
Sumter superior court. This will
the first time that colored
„urora have sit on cases in
Sumter. It is sta ed that they do not
like the duties thrust upon them ami
would prefer to be loft out altogether.
But our colored citizens will dud that
freedom imposes many unpleasant du
ties on them.
—Jonesboro News: There are two
men oalling themselves eiders in the
Mormon ohurch stopping in the wes
tern portion of our county. They hail
from Utah, and their presence here
bodes no good. To tolerate the preach
ing of their nefarious doctrines is a re
flection on tbe intelligence of our peo
ple, and unles the law can be made to
reach them, common deeenoy de
mands that they be notified to go, and
to stand not upon their going but to go
at once.
—The Republican gives this cranky
notice taken up by Amerious clerks:
The young men and boys around town
have queer charms about their person.
Some of them carry buck eyes, some
have rabbit leet, some pigeon legs, and
some one thing, others something else
John Miller came back from a visit to
the country the other day with an alli
gator egg, and just as soon as it is found
out that alligator eggs worn or carried
about the person is a specific against
all discuses and a sure guarantee that
the person carrying it will be success
ful in every undertaking, then every
clerk in the city will go to hunting
alligator eggs.
— Washington Gazette : The cheapest
way to have a dining room floor cov
ered with a nice new matting that we
have ever known of, has just come
under our own observation. A little
more than a year ago a lady in tbiB
place had a small pig put in a pen near
the house. It was fed on scraps from
the table, and not a niokle’s worth of
food has evor been bought for it. Now
it is grown and has a litter of pigs of
its own. It was sold not long ago,
with the pigs, for ten dollars, and »
nice new matting bought for the din
ingroom fl )or. This is a lesson ii
small matters that it would be well for
all of our people to learn,
Richmond, writing from Atlanta to
the Augusta Cbrouicle, has this to say
of melons: The melon business is be
ginning to tail off. As far as I am able
to learn the shipments up to this time,
north arid west, will run to 5.000 car
loads of 1,200 melons each, making an
aggregate ol 6,000,000 melons. Placing
the average price at seven cents each,
we have#420 000 as the amount realized
by the melon raisers. The freight on «
oar load of melons from Macon tc
Nashville is $33. From tbe melon re
glon to the market, estimating the
average of freight and the dropping of
the produce along the line, it is a s ife
estimate to put the receipts of the rail
roads at |40 per car, which would rea
lize them the handsome sum ol $200 000
iof freight from this new industry that
s in its infancy.^

Starving the Lawyers — Mich
igan has made an innovation in the
law of wills and their probate, which
has many advantages over the laws
inexistence in other states. Iiy its
terms a man may make his will aud
have it probated while living. Notice
is then given to heirs, devisees and
others interested to appear and file
objections, failing in which they
cannot be heard after the death of
the testator. The effect of this law
will be to carry out the will of the
testator and prevent ^litigation.
