New York, October 19.—Edward
Hovey, the murderer of his aister*iu
law, was hanged this morning.
It was a very trying scene which
Governor Cleveland had to go through
when Lawyer Kintzlog appeared to
plead for Edward Hovey’s life, ac
companied by the distressed old fa
liter of the prisoner. The governor,
with his invariable equanimity,
shook hands with the couusel and
the old mau, aud then leaned back
in bis chair to hear the argument.
Lawyer IvinUing begau Ins argu
ment by readlug the opiuiou of the
court of appeals. “This opinion,
your excellency," ho said, “is dis
sented from by three of the judges—
three such eminent judges as Charles
A Ripallo, Samuel E trie and Charles
E. Finch. But one more Judge and
this young man would have had a
new trial. Only one more. It is a
slender thread ou which to have a
man's life suspended. It was a slim
majority by which he was cou
dtunned to a felon's death, aud with
you alone, governor, now rests the
power to give him lifeor death. Upon
you alone now devolves the final do
cislon of the great question of E l
ward Hovey*a fate.
He thou reviewed the new evi
denco which Dr. Hardy had em
bodied iu au affidavit to the effect that
Hovey was so dtupffi.d by drugs the
day after the murder that he could
not remember fora week before, and
he claim’d that could he have had
hat evidence prese ited before a jury
nis client would have received no
grt ater sentemv than imprisonment
for life. He dwelt eloquently upon
the disgrace which Hovey’s execu*
• ion would bring upon his family,
and upon the old gray haired and
grief stricken father, who all tills
while stood near with his hands
clasped and a painful look of mingled
hope and apprehension in his ’ace.
When Mr. Kiotzing had concludi d
the old man himself made au appeal
in low, trembling tones to the gover
nor, urging that he and his children
might he spared ihe disgrace of his
child’s execution. He described with
simple pathos the diath of the con
vict’s mother and tho desolation
which bad fallowed her son’s terri
ble deed.
“Yes. If is true," said the gover
nor, “and it is very hk!; but tnose
aie evils that always follow iu the
train of crime. 1 will take this mat
ter into consideration, to the exclu
sion of anything else, and will semi
you my answer." .
With that the parly left, all of
them shaking hands witli the gover
nor at parting, and the various par
ties of visitors who had gu/.e 1 idly at
the scene rasuiued Uieir avocation of
lO' kiig at the lino furniture and
criticising the executive chamber.
But the governor refused to Intel fere,
and let tho law take its course.
Hovey passed tho night quietly,
sleeping a part of the time. He had
frequent communions witli his pas
tor, Rev. Dr. Guilahent. Stimulants
Were administered to him at long in
tervals. Shortly before he was led
to execution a hypodermic injectiou
of morphine was given him. He ex
pressed himself as resigned to his
late and said he would meet
his death like a man.
He had forgiven all those who had
injured him and hoped those whom
he had injured would do the same.
Hovey expressed sincere contrition
for hi* crime. Services were con
ducted and sacrement administered
to him in his ceil this morning
Shortly before 8 o’clock, accompanied
by hispastorandsomedeputysheriff-q
lie took up his match to tho scaffold.
There a short prayer was read and
the noose adjusted. At 7:56 o’clock
the rope was cut aud Hovey swung in
the air. Him legs and arms worked
convulsively for a few minutes. IDs
ch*st heaved for half a minute and
all was over.
