that a special stamp be provided

WHAT COMMANDER WILDES SAYS.
Secretary Chandler has written a
letttr to Commander Wildes, of the
United S ales Yuntic, at-kmg him
why be did not keep with the steamer
Proteus during the voyage of tlie lat
ter to Sweet Sound for the relief of
L'euterant Greely. and why, after
hearing of the wieck of the Proteus
and tbe failure of the expedition, he
did not luud all Die provisions he
could spare at Littleton Island for
Greely’a use. Commander Wildes
has writteu a letter In ieply,
stating that he did not keep
with Die Proteus because lie could
not steam as fust as that vessel, and
could carry only half as much coal as
the Prop us did, and at Good Haven
and U per navi k he was delayed by
utetewary repairs to the boilers ami
by the fog. He says, furthermore :
“I did not intend to run the vessel
under my command in the bap-
heaard, happy-go-lucky fashion
winch dually brought the Proteus to
grief, but touiukesureas far as possi
ble of every atep which I took. Had
tbe Proteus been ordered to beep
coDiptiuy with Die Yantic, it would
have been vaslly belter for all con
certed.” To Die leeretarv’a second
question he replied, that he did not
laud provisions at Littleton Island
became he thought it his first duty to
look after the shipwrecked survivors
of the Proteus, and so doing went
awxy from Littleton Island and was
nit vented by ice from getting hack.
In conclusion he says : “I beg to state
that 1 am prepared to shoul
der all responsibility which prop-'
erly belongs to me, and If this
statenn nt is not satisfactory and there
still remains doubt iu the department
that I have not done my duty as hii

figures for the fiist eighteen days of
the month are $20,060,264, as against
$ lb 854,094 lor the first eighteen days
of October last year. The moat sur
prising feature of the returns is that
the internal levenuo receipts are a
little larger this month than they
were during the corresponding period
of last year. This of course
