A few days ago ttie New Orleans
Times Democrat published inter
views with tiie governors of the
southern states with referenda to the
progress of their respective stales in
agriculture, education, commerce,
manufacturing, mineral resources
and development of enterprises gen
erally* The 'Times*Democrat takes
such freaks as Uiih occasionally and
the energy it displays iu this direc
tion places it iu the front rank of
journalistic enterprises in this coun
try. These iuterviews come from
sources that cannot he disputed and
the exhibit of the progress made is
gratifying in the highest degree. It
show's that a new south, strong, great
and prosperous Iihh risen upon the
ruins of the old. Jn other states, as
well as in Georgia, this great work
lias not been accomplished hy the
south lying supinely upon her hack
and waiting for northern capital to
come in and build tip her waste
places. The history of all the states
show that home pluck and energy
went to work witli a determined ef
fort to succeed, and where northern
capital has been invested it has been
only to add to this success, not to in
augurateit.
'I'his morning we publish, iu rooii-
densed form, what Governor Mc
Daniel had to say to the Times
Democrat's representative, and will
soon publish other statements from
the same source. Kvcry Georgian
wlio reads it must feel a Just pride in
tlie progress of his stale. It shows a
healthful condition iu eveiy depart
ment discussed, and the discussion
takes ill a very wide scope. Hindi ar
ticle*! have a tendency not only to
benefit (hi! stales and sections indi
cated, hut the result will he for gen
eral good throughout the land.
The houi!i never had a more bril
liant future than now. Factories and
other industrial enterprises an*
springing up and meeting with suc
cess iu all parts of the land. It is the
dawn of the new era, tho first Htep
of which was taken when the recon
struction laws were repealed and the
people of the south had their rights
to select their own government at
the poll free from the interference
of federal bayonets. From that
time forth a better feeling
has prevailed in the south toward the
west, east and north. This spirit now
prevails, and northern men and
northern money will alike receive a
cordial welcome. There is no longer
lit tlie south personal or political
prejudice against northern men.
They are no longer ostracised as they
were when reconstruction laws ami
carpet-baggers dominated this section
to its great suffering and loss. While
this is true, we must not he unmind
ful of the fact that the “gods help
those who help themselves. 0 If
Columbus had have folded her hands
eighteen years ago, when her (10,000
hales of cotton, all of her factories,
all of her mills hut one, and many
>f her other buildings were
burned, the picture would be very
diflerent from what it is to-day. She
lOtild not boast her sixty thousand
spindles, her twenty thousand looms,
the largest iron foundry in the south,
the only bagging factory in theHtate,
and her many other enterprises that
rise as a monument to southern pluck
and southern capital. What is true
of Columbus is true of other sections
in the south, though no oily in the
state of Georgia has received less aid
in foreign capital. Where Atlanta
ambAugusta have received thousands
of dollars in foreign capital invested,
Columbus has received nothing.
What she is and has, is the work of
her own hands.
Take for instance tho two cities of
Columbus and Augusta, which are
the two leading manufatuving cities
of the south, ill Columbus we have
a capital and capital stock of over
three millions invested in cotton
mills, ami not a dollar iN owned hy
northern capitalists. There are a few
men who now live at the north who
own stock in the factories, but they
lived here at the time the stock was
procured, and when they went north
they carried more capital with
them than they left behind.
In Augusta there has been a
new mill built with a capital stock of
$1,000,0(H)— the John 1\ King. Of
this $000,000 is owned in Augustaand
$100,000 ia northern capital. In all
the other mills the northern capital
Is about on a par with northern capi
tal In this city. To say ten percent,
of tho capital invested in southern
manufactories came from the north
would he a very large estimate ami
would exceed rather than fall short of
the exact figures.
From h Washington special we are
told that during the last ten days va
rious rumors are in circulation affirm
ing: disagreements between the pres
ident and mcmheis of his cabinet.
At one time it was said that the pres
ident and Secretary (’handler had
quarreled; then it was Secretary led
ger, between whom and the presi
dent there had been an exchange of
viewa not of a pleasant chaiacter.
There does not appear to he any foun
dation for these rumors, except that
it has for some time been believed
that the president would lie very
glad to get rid of some of the members
of his cahinent, and that he had found
occasion to express to one or two of
them his decided desent from certain
actions which had been taken by
them. The president is, however, of
such a reticent nature himself, and
lias impressed so forcibly ilie virtue
of reticence on his cabinet, that he
nor any of them is likely to commu
nicate any facts with reference to
these matters.
The Washington Jltpublican ad
vises the colored vote is to stand by
the republican party aud secure an
overwhelmingly republican oougre.aa,
so as to have another civil rights act
passed which shall compel white
barbers, hotel keepers aud owuers of
palace cars to surreuder to the uegro,
This is very foolish advice, since the
supreme court o! the United States
has settled adversely Die question of
the right of congress to enact such
laws* The civil rights act of 1875 has
never been eolorced since its passage,
although the republican have had
full control of the government.
In union there is strength, as the
bad cigar said to the fried onion.
We see the statement made that the
amount of money expended in new
buildings in New York city in the
past live y<ars is over $100,000,01)0.
This is more than the whole value of
properly In each of several of the
states. It is more than Die value of
tiie real e-date in each of a large num
ber of cities of li»e first-class of the
union. In the first nine months of
the present year the amount expend
ed iu new buildings is stated at $48,
000,000. The enormous sum of $13,
000,000 lias been expended in the first
three»quarters of this year in first
cIhhsdwellings, and an equal amount
in French aud English Hals. These
figures indicate an abundance of
cheap money. Interest is low and
surplus capital abounds, orsirdi sums
would not go into luxurious dwell*
log*.
As far bh light has boon tbr<
upon tho murder of Ada Atkinson at
Fowler, Indians, the deed was one of
tho an st heartless and cold blooded on
record. No provocation appears to
have been given hi any direction, it
having neon apparently tho outcome
of pure (levllishnoss. That the mur
derer escaped the vengeance of Die
lynchers who wore after him is a tri
umph of law, hut had they succeeded
in getting hold of him there would
have been llttln regret.
