Mr James Thompson, who lives

Mr Thompson lost his store hout e by

tempt to burn the gin house of Mr A R
Strother, in this county, way made on
the 11th instant- The incendiary fired
a pile of old rails immediately behind
the tint room, and Mr Strother, w ho
had been fiom home, returned and
discovered the lire barely in time to
save the building. When he readied
it the rosin was dripping from the
weather boarding, and in a low min-
utes more would huve beeu too late,
The house contained one hale of cotton
and 500 bushels ol cotton seed.

sary of the planting ot the first Baptist
church in that city. The first church

1833. Its cost was $9U0, and it com •
menced with a membership of 15 At
present there are 20 churches aud nino
missions of the denomination in tho
city. Besides this them are two educa
tional Institutions, the University of
Chicago aud tho Btpiist Union Theo
logical Seminary at Morgan Park. The
membership of the churches is about
0,000, anrl there are over 7,500 children
in the flourishing Hunday-t-ohools.
On tho 20.h Inst., the stock for the
first c s rich farm in thenouthorn states
was shipped from Now York. It goo*
to Sylvan Lake, Orauge conniv, Flor
ida. The bud* weighed from 150 to 200
pounds each, ai d stood seven feet high.
Their first crop of leathers will be due
next year. In about two yeais from
now it is expected that they will fund h
two crops annually. As this experi
ment is valuabio, by reason of the new
field it may open to enterprise, it is
watched with keen Interest.

One of the prisoners, Grahajpn, a white
man was sentenced to the penitentiary
lor three years.
— On Tuesday evening last, Mr John
Cooper, who was feeding the gin at th-
steam ginnery of Cooper <fc Revere in
Gi nova county, got his hand caught in
the saws and had it badly cut. Mr
Cooper Is now sufloring very much and
will lose several of his fingers.
Troy Messenger: At the regular
monthly conference ol the First Bap
tist church, held last Sunday morning,
Rev. Mr. Wamboldt was called to the
pastorate of the church for an indt fi li
ne time. The call was accepted by M r.
Wamboldt. It is a source of much
gratification to the iriends and admirers
of the eloquent divine that he will con
tinue to fi.i the puipithere.
