These .statistics are compiled by
the Record from the official sUtis
of the United H-dates agricultural de
partmeut and may, therefore, be
sidered reliable. Statistics gathered
by a newspaper for the purpose
showing special advantages of a p
tlcuiar locality may be biased some
what in order (o make the best ad'
vantage, but it is not so with the ag
ricullural department. The table
shows that the south in 18H5 has
total investment iu farm animals ag
gregating 40,400,000 in number and
are valued at $o!>9,G(X),000 -w’Lich is
an Increase iu ten years of IS 800,000
animals and in values of $195,000,000.
The figures as relates lo Georgia
show a gratifying iucre&ee In all ani
tnals except as to horses, and In these
there is a falling off of 12.524. The
mules In Georgia have lucrrased
number 41,ii43, sheip 181,347, hogs
237,237, milch cows 79,3-58, oxen and
other cattle 200 011.
I) is generally corceded that but
f.*w bogs are raised in the south, hut
the figures tell a different story.
In 1875 ihe south had 10,035,310
hogs, in lsS-5 It had 10,532 510, an in
crease of 0,500,1X10 The increase In
rest of the country
was 12.500 000, the total in
crease being 19,000,000; so it will be
*eeu that as the south has one-third
the population, and the increase iu
the number of her hogs is just one-
third of tbe total increase in the
try, she is fully maiutainli g h«r
position, notwithstanding what hts
been considered the rcmarkaole
growth of the western pork husinets
As surprising as it may seem, these
statistics show that the numb*
hogs in proportion to population is
greater In the south than iu the iml-
of the country—the New Eng
land anil middle stales haviug com
paratively few and being compelitd
to draw much of their supply from
tbe west.

Our telegraphic advices from
Washington show that there are a
great tnuuy applications made for
: under the democratic adminis
tration. Yesterday morning it was
stated in the Washington dispatches
that the number of applicants for
postmasterships received the day be
fore had never been c((iia!<d iu any
r»us day. The Washington cor-
res|»ondentH of repubbeau newspa
pers have sent out reports from tbe
national capital that the south was
there In the saddle demanding all the
offices until a great many people
actually believe it to be true. There
is other testimony, and that of a most
reliable character,which goes to show
that such statements are utterly false.
The truth of the matter is thus told
by the special oorreepoudent of the
New Orleans Times-Democrat, now
in Washington :

The modesty of the south in this
matter of offlce-teeking is all the
more remarkable when It is remem
bered that nine-tenths, if not even a
larger per cent, of the lucrative fed
eral offices lu the south are fillet!
by aliens. In a large majority of
oasee the meu who HU them have no
other recommendation thau that they
isfesessetl quail filiations necessary to
carry out i artisan purposes, and these
qualifications are such as to render
them obnoxious to the dtceut people
of the south. There is hardly a
probability that there will be auy
more applioatious by southern demo
crats for offices iu the south uq-
tier a democratic administration
than there were by northern re
publicans to fill the cffices
iu the south under a re
publican administration. All
Thk Louisville Courier-Journal

pool, which was reduced to a condi
tion of suspended animation last

other are the Chesapeake and Ohio
