They Got the Wrong Tlctels.
A terrible mistake recently rc ur
ied Id one f our most critical j jur
Bale, which illustrates the danger of
■mixing up reviews of different art
•subjects, and the manner in which
different htar.chea of culture can be
confounded. A eiarrlug match and
a ooncert took place on the same eve
ning, and by mischance the tickets
reached the wrong art critics of the
newspaper. The musical critic,
thinking it was only a broadening
cut of bis field of labor, boldly went
at bis task, and banded in the follow
ing review:
* Soiree Pugtlist'que.—Thumper's
ball was well filled with an aristo
cratic audience last night, who had
the pleasure of being present at a de
lightful programme, which was
charmingly carried out. A 8 o’clock
the conductor called time, but forgot
to specify Wbat tempo was desired.
Signor J L Sullivan! and Mr Driscoll
appeared In the duet, which seemed
to te m the character of a knockturn
Signor Sullivam’s touch was a tr ue
heavy, aLd he seems much addicted
to forearm setiou. His performance
was, nevertheless, a striking one, and
had much power. A great many
‘round-.’ were upon the programme,
and we are glad to see this old Eug
jieb style cf composition coming intc
favor again.”
The art critic of sparring v ai at
firsts tt.flr uueasv when he i-aut
that he had strayed into a musical
soiree; hut ho soon found that hi>-
knowledge cf.tna readily into play,
and gave the paper the following air
count:
“Piano Slugging Extraordinary—
Apollo Orphans ball wbb crowded
with a lively audio tee last night to
seeRafe Josephine knock out a piano
in four rounds. Betting on the event
was not very lively, and an c fler of
two to one on the piano found no
takers. Precisely at 8 o’clock the
master of ceremonies start! d the pro
cecdings with au orchestral preludp,
but this only added to the inteiest
attaching to the main event Rate
■came to the front smiling. He had
evidently been sponged iff just be
fore the combat and linked
in excellent condition He a
once struck out wilh bi
right, and foil, w d it with a terrific
lefthander, and managed to get away
without a return. He now got in
some light work with bo'h bands,
end for a short time seemed sparring
for wind. A short rally followed;
but just as the faint-hearted wereb
ginning to back tbe piano to the tune
■of three to one, he caught it a heavy
body blow on :he Jett side and in an
instant had It in chancery and woe
punishing it severely. Such heavy
pounding has rarely been seen in any
exhibition The combat wus so evi
dently in Rqfe’s favor that we did
not slay to tee the eke The police
arrangements were perfect, no dis
turbances of any kind taking place
among he audience.”
And now ti c sporting critic holds
himself a mueical authority, and the
muelcal critic is avoided bs« bad man
and a heavy hitter.- B ston Hi raid
