May 10.—'The recent meet ing tit Montgomery of so many generals who figured in the ‘'late unpleasant ness'' or, the confederate side suggests the utus- tiotf AVhat hits become of all the south ern military chieftains who, after tin war, had in most eases to begin life over again w ith ruined fortunes and blasted hopes? Seine of them are now well-known as sen ators, representatives, governors of states and federal office holders, but a very large number have sunk ont of sight since the fatal Appomattox. In order to resurrect them for a moment’s glance vour correspondent called on General Marcus J. Wright, agent of the war department for the collection of con federate records, who Isa walking eney- clopii’din of facts relating to the "lost cause.” From him was obtained the fol lowing accounts of the whereabouts and occupations of some of the principal con federate leaders. Of thu six full generals appointed by the confederate congress only two survive, Joseph E. Johnson, now United States commissioner of railroads and C. T. Beauregard of Louisiana and manager of the Louisiana lottery draw- 0f the twenty lieutenant generals ap pointed to the provisional army several are living. E. Kirbv Smith is professor of mathematics in the University oftlu South, Tennessee, which is an Episcopal institu tion. James Longstreet is keeping a hotel down in Georgia, after sorting a term there as United States marshal under President Haves. D. H. Hill, of North Carolina, was still recently president of the Agricultural School of the state of Arkansas, and now earns a living chiefly as a magazine writer, liichard Taylor, son of President Taylor, is engaged m building a canal near New Orleans. Stephen B. Lee is a farmer and president of the State Agricultural College of Mississippi. Jubal E. Early practices law at Lynchburg, although his chief sup port is derived from his connection with the Louisiana lottery.- company. Of the major generals, A. P. Stewart is now president of the University of Missis- sissippi, at Oxford, where Secretary Lamar was a professor at the time of his election to the United States senate, Wade Hamil ton is up in the north end of tlie capitol, where ne is likely to remain for life. Joseph Wheeler is in congress, is very wealthy, and one of tire largest planters in Alabama. He Ls tlie only southern mem ber who entertains largely in Washington. John B Gordon is a millionaire railroad , man, and figured conspicuously at the Montgomery celebration. General Luring. ! of Florida, was engineering in Egypt until a few years ago. when he came to New York to work at. the same profession. IS. E. Cheatham was recently appointed post master at Nashville, Tenn., by president Cleveland. .Sam Jones, of Virginia, is in the judge advocate general's office. S. B. Buckner lives in Louisville. Ky., where he owns a great deal of real estate whose revenue supports him. S. B. French earns a scanty subsistanee by engineering in Georgia. C. L. Stephenson is in Freder icksburg, Virginia. John H. Forney, brother of congressman Forney, is in an in sane asslum ut Selma, Ala." Abney H. Maury is Washington agent for a‘New York life insurance company. John C. Walker is also in the insurance brininess here. Isaac li. Trimble is in retirement in Baltimore on a fortune derived from the “Trimble whisky.” General Heath is employed by the government to do engineering on some southern rivers. Cadmus Wilcox was formerly employed about the seriate chamber, but is now in retirement willing a history of the Mexican war. Fitzhugh Lee is gov ernor of Virginia. Charles W. Field, once doorkeeper of the house, is superintendent of the Hot Springs reservation. Win. B Bate is governor of Tennessee, and is on t re straight road to the Cubed Statu., sen ate, W. H. F. Lee is a Fairfax county farmer. C. J. Polignac, who came o\ e'r from France to espouse the eon fedora* e cause, is back in Paris busied with im mense railroad operations. J. F. Fagan v. ns marshal of Arkansas under Gr a nt. 11 e is now at Little Rock. William Mahc.no is in the senate, as is E. C. Walthall, of Mississippi. John S. Marmaduke is governor of Mis souri, ami an aspirant for Senator Cockrell's seat. Pierce SI. B. Young lias gone to Russia as United (states consul-general nt St. Petersburg. SI. C. Butler is a senator cf the United States. Thomas L Russell, after making a fortune a.s attorney for the Northern Pacific railroad, has set*led down at his old home, Carrersville, Va. (II. W. Cox, of North Carolina, is in the house; X. B. Bray is commissioner of the land office of Texas; Basil Duke edits the Southern Bivouac at Louisville, Ky.; J. T. Morgan, of Alabama, and S. B. Maxey, of Texas, are United States senators; A. II. Seales is governor of North Carolina; C. M. Shelley is third auditor of the treasury; E. L. Thomas is in the land office of the inte rior department; R. M. Vance is assistant commissioner of patents. A hundred more brigadiers are scattered over the country, most of them engaged in civil engineering. A Patent Hum- Hull 1 lulu The foundry and factory boys have or ganized a base ball club that will revolu tionize the manner of catching and pitch ing. The pitcher has a stick stuck up in the ground at his place. The ball is; put on this stick, and by touching a little spring it is sent with lightiling rapidity to the batman. The consequence is that the Hall is never hit by the batman, while the catcher behind lias also a patent clamper within his hands, and never misses a ball, they have a professional pitcher. Mr. Andr.is had been advised that his daughter had been placed in tlu- lunatic asylum at this place by a carefully ar ranged plan of her husband, who had found favor with another woman, men comely in his t;. ,-s than bis svife. ,\1 r.' Amiras, in company with your correspon dent, visited the asylum, and the seem- be tween the father and daughter was truly affecting. She recognized him in an in stant and implored him to take her away with him. Tnt father says that letters have been intercepted between her and her rela tives, and that she has been brutally treat ed at ti mis by her husband, even while they resided in Indiana. The husband, whose name is Michael Hilos, purchased an Sd- acro farm in Logan county, this state, the capital used being from the sum of ?JOOO given as a wedding present by Andrus to his daughter. This, together with the attraction of another femr.'e, it is claimed, has led Hilos to pursue the course lie has to get his lawful wife incarcerated in the asylum. Mrs. Hilos is about twenty-eight years of age, and the mother of six children, one of whom, two weeks old, was in arms when she came to the asylum.
