Union Church fai.d Fitzpatrick beats have chosen dele- g.,i, s, with instructions for Clayton for jeuvrnor, and the other I teats which net Saturday will no doubt instruct in t.ue .same way, tints making tile county practi- e,.lly solid for Clayton. Dawson and Mc- Kle'ro.v have friends, but their strength is too small to do either any good. The Eutaw Mirror says: Gen. Clayton, fa; popular candidate for governor, spent Saturday in town, and gave the Mirror a pleasant call. He found our democracy r.Uner inharmonious. J but got a warm re lation from our people and made many new acquaintances He is a grand old gen ii, man, worthy to be governor of even the gn at state of Alabama, and we believe we voice a very large majority of Greene’s cit izens in saying that' if our favorite, Mr. fvuy, should happen not to "get there,” we nope General Clayton will. The Talladega Advance says results so IV" received of the primary election con firm the unanimous election of Henry for circuit clerk and Miller for probate judge, mill Wilkes and Webb probably tor the J legislature. McKleroy will get one-half an ! probably’ two-thirds. Stay may get two votes. Thornton and Baker both have good chances for the legislature, though tne summing tip is hard to reach a con clusion Oil. The Birmingham Age, Fayette Court House correspondent, says a private letter from Vernon, under date of the Sthsays: “The Lamar county convention was held to-day, and gave a solid delegation for Bankhead for congress, and J. 15. Sanford for state senator.” The senatorial conven tion convenes at Hamilton, Marion county, and since Lamar, the deciding county, has given its support to Hanford, his nomina tion is assured. F. W. Bowden was to-day nominated senator from Talladega at Chandler’s springs. ■ Thus closes the moat intensely exciting contest that has ever been known in this district. The primaries on last Sat urday settled the question overwhelming ly in favor of Mr. Bowden. Dr. J. 11. Reynolds, of Farriorville, Bul ks k county, has announced him-sclf a can- di'lnto for re-election to the lower house of the next legislature. He has made a good representative, and will no doubt be nomi nated by the convention, which nominates county officers. Colonel Thomas L. The gloves are given x.nt t«> women v* no work cat home to be stitched-tint’ i-> to have the tingvis eompieted and tlie : nu obi putin. This is now nearly all done by a recently invented and cleverly adapted sexvi.-ig machine, llie needle or which comes down on the tip of an upright iron 1 finger. Gloves are not all s tit cue cl in the immediate neigliborhood of the fac tories, but are often sent long distances into remote country villages where, work being scarce, labor is cheap. And to facili tate this a class of middle men or women) lias grown up—people who come in tiu'.n the country to the lactories and take away IDO or l.)0 dozen a week, which tney distribute among the women in the* village in which they live, collect again when finished, and bring back to the factory. There pulter.s-out or bctgmen are paid the usual price, some half crown a dozen for the stileuing, and make their own bargain with the actual workers. They are generally supposed to make a protit of about 8d per dozen ; hut as a nat ter of fact, being shopkeepers, they com monly make two protits—one on the gloves and another on the goods the sewers pur chase at their shops. These people have a somewhat difficult part to play, as they stand between two lires; but they are a most useful class, and carry work and its rewards into many I villages where, but for them, they would never come. They have done much to stay the exud'-^s of the population Irjjy i this part of the agricultural districts, emir I ding, parents to keep thuir young people, J and especially their young women,at home instead of.sen ding them to the great towns to seek for employment. Having conic back from the stitchers the gloves are sent out once more. If they arc heavy winter gloves they are sent out to be lined with 1 warm soft cotton material. If they are lighter goods they arc at once dispatched to be welted--that is, to have the binding put round the top and the opening at the wrist. The buttons or clasps,as the case may be. are .'text added; that done, they come back to the factory for the last time and ! pass the iinal examination. They have ! still a rough, tumbled, unfinished look, which would prove anything but tempting to a purchaser. They are now forwarded | to the laying out room, where they are stretched with ordinary glove stretchers, , and then put on heated steel hands, which take out all the creases and improve tlieir appearance. Nothing now remains but to assort them, to put them up in neat bun dles according to size, to pack them in I boxes, and to send them to market.— Ali 1 the Year Around.
