Chicago, May 19.—The following crop
summary will be printed in this week’s is
sue of the Farmer’s Review :
The heavy rains of the past week have,
lessened somewhat the former excellent,
outlook for spring wheat in Nebraska,'
■Wisconsin, Minnesota and Dekota. The
great raiufull bus also occasioned some in
jury to the winter wheat in Wisconsin,
Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, where in
some ox the fields it was beginning to head
out. The reports do not indicate, how
ever, any serious damage as yet.
In other respects the outlook |
for all the grains in all the j
states and territories continues excellent. |
The reports of poor showing for winter |
wheat, or reports of injury from insect
life, with the exception of the permanent 1
damage heretofore noted in various coun- j
tics in Kansas, are rare anu isolated. The
presence of the chinch bug is noted in
Christian county, in central Illinois, and i
in several Indiana counties. In Indiana I
winter wheat has obtained a growth of
from ten to 15 inches, and in Crawford,
Henry, Jay, Lagrange, Switzerland and
Vermillion, which send in such reports
tnis week, the outlook continues excellent.
The only countv in Missouri to send a re
port of . a poor showing of winter I
wheat is _ Clay. The report states I
thul one-third of the acreage lias been
plowed up. The generality of the reports
lrom Missouri indicate a crop of 25 per
cent, above- the average. In Harrison and !
Shelby counties the outlook is decided to
be the best ever known. In Kansas, so.ue
cl the counties note an improvement in the- !
winter wheat outlook within the last thirty ‘
days. Ill Jefferson county, there is the i
promise oi 75 per cent, of an average crop.
In Lincoln county, the early-sown wheat
has been saved, and in 1’awnc-e county, the
present prospect is fora fair average cr.p.
Luticr is to be added to the list of counties
where the crop is an entire failure.
. 1 he reports from Michigan indicate an l
improvement in the wheat outlook within
the past two weeks. The reports from
Ohio are generally of a promising cltar-
k-ter. L, Ashtabula County, however, the
report indicates a poor outlook. The re
ports front Dakota continue favorable,
t u"i one of the principal wlieat-ri'ising
votmti-s in the Red river valley, reo.jr:-

wmle Cuss county reports the condition of
w neat 29 per cent, above the avert.*The
reports from Minnesota are iniiforiniy

New York. May 19.— 1 The Tjmes yester
day says: Ex-?res"idout Artliur's conditJoti
has been steadily growing worse during
t he past week, but he has not relapsed so
far as to have lost all the ground gained
during his unexpected rally of about ten
days ago. Before that rally his friends
were fearful that any moment mi^-ht bring
the dreaded end, but his suddfen improve
ment revived the hope which had almost
tied during the weary days of watching at
the sick man’s side. Some of the more
enthusiastic of his friends believfed that the
turn for the better had come, but the
steady decline since then has
dampened the enthusiasm, and there are
few. if any, who now believe that the ex
president will ever again leave 1 his house
alive. Sudden and unexpected rallies, fol
lowed bv gradual but steady declines, ara
peculiarities of Mr. Arthur's disease well
known to physicians, and watched by them
with grave fears. The danger is ever pres
ent that the poisoned blood of the patient
will suffuse tne brain, and when that hap
pen.-, the victim of Bright’s disease feels the
last oi’ni* sufferings. Mr. Arthur hears the
confinement patiently aitd bravely, and
knowing, as xie does, the hopelessness of
hitf’ease, makes the labor of love of his at
tendants as light as possible by his gentle
ness and unvarying cheerfulness.”
