The young men of Atlanta, who are the sons of confederate veterans, will soon form an association. Veterans will be al lowed to become members, without the right to vote. Several bee trees having been found near Ballard's mill, Thomas county, Hiram Bal lard has cut two of the trees. There was four feet of honey in one and twelve feet in the other. Elherton was visited by severe wind storm last Saturday evening, driving a per fect cloud of dust before it. A kitchen on Wm.H. Smith's lot was lifted up by a whirl wind and demolished. No person was hurt and no serious damage done by the storm. Elections were held in Roystou and Carnesville districts of Franklin county last Saturday on the stock law question. Rovston went for stock law by three ma jority. It is supposed that Carnesville went the same way, but the return had not been received. There is considerable sickness among the negroes on the plantations of Dr. Beasley and D. L. Owen, in Montgomery. Five more were buried last week, and there are others not expected to live. Dysentery is said to be the cause of the fatality. Some time since measles were prevalent in the neighborhood. The large Raw and grist mill of E. C. Beacham, located several miles east of Dunlin, accidentally caught on fire on Wednesday night of best week and was tot -i.y destroyed. All of the machinery was mined, and Mr. Beacham will not af- ti'ir.) t to repair it. This is the second time that he has had his mill burned. A huge alligator was killed by Miles Brack at Greene’s mill, Oconee county, last, week. The alligator was shot in the* head with buckshot, and after being killed was disemboweled. Mis stomach contained two very large turtles, two red horse weighing five or six pounds apiece and five large moccasins. He wa. 1 nine feet long. I 'iiii'lilu. It is al)ont the size of a half grown chicken, has blood red eyes, jet black neck feathers, pure white bill and the body feathers are dark blue, or dove-colored. It baa long legs like a crane, with half web feet. It is ambitious in the extreme and refuses to make friends with any one. Monday, Jerry Woodard, one of the ne groes who has charge of tlie Dublin ferry, struck Jack McG'a'.l, another negro, a se vere blow upon the head with a maul, from the effects of which he is now suffer ing very much. Jack was intoxicated and raised a row with Jerry, because Jerry wished to take him across the river in a boat he did not want to cross in. Jack Is the same negro who had bis throat cut in a fight several months ago. A. Ernest,, a contractor of Warrcnton, who is a native of Ohio, states that he and the late president of the United States, James A. Garfield, were school compan ions during their boyhood. Tite parents of each resided in the same neighborhood and the two families were intimately ac quainted. In speaking of Mrs. Garfield, the mother of tile ex-president. Mr. Ernest refers to her as “grandma,” and says she has trotted him on her knee times innu merable, a hen he was a child. But for all this, Mr. Ernest did not vote for him when l.t ran for president. Last week J. H. Yopp left hia homo, about sever, miles from Dublin, to visit a Rollin’s college are also being erectei The dredger Chester has nearly com pleted its work at Oak Hill, on the Halifax river, and will soon lie at work on the Haulover. This will give a steamboat channel to Indian river. One of the South Carolina sominary ladies contracted the measles while at St. Augus tine, and had to be left in that city under , the care of a physician when her compan- , ions started homeward. W. It. It. crosses the St. John’s river six | milts above Sanford, to Oakland, at the south end of I,nke Apopka, n distance of thirty-seven miles. The iron is all to be delivered by June 30th. All the engines, coaches, box cars, etc., have been pur chased, and trains will be running regular ly between those two points by August 1st• (Joininenciag November 1st, the road will be continued southwesterly to the Gulf cost. The company has entered into a contract with the J., T. and K. \Y. It.
