an average of seventeen years the interest on
tl.v-e omuls amounted to $59,500, thus making the
principal and interest paid by the city $109,500.
The city sold the stock in this road for eighteen
Ci nt< on the dollar, thus realizing $9000 for the
expenditure."
"What Jq you think of the Savannah and
Memphis road?’’ asked the reporter.
"At lirst glance it does not appear a very wDc-
ir vestment. In 1856 the city issued $35,000 m
bonds to the Savannah and Memphis, now Co-
ltmihus and Western, and in 1871 issued to the
•same road $64,000. On the first issue of these
J •mds $73,350. and on the second issue $47,440 in
interest, has been paid, making a total expendi
ture of $219,990. l-'or this outlay the city lias
nothing net a dollar's worth of stock and re
ceiving no remuneration for that which passed
out of her control. But now let us look at the
facts." said he. continuing. "Thisroad kw year

'The road now runs to Goodwater, and 1 am in a
position to know that an early extension of it to
Birmingham is contemplated. 'This will givens
f- straight line to the Alabama coal and iron
fields, and will also give direct connection with

"Du! the city make any oilier railroad venture?’’
"N es; only one, that w is the North and South,
