Richard Townsend, the negro who killed Sheriff Epperson, of Florida, in Lowndes county, last December, was found guilty Thursday and sentenced to be hung on July to. During the storm in Wilkes county, lightning struck a tree just 20 feet from David Rorie’s front door. It blazed the tree, tore the gate to pieces, and slightly shocked his wife. Pascal, convicted in the McDuffie county court for selling liquor in violation of prohibition. The ease has been fought through all the courts, and this was the final appeal. The old Bank of Augusta has been pur- i based, renovated and handsomely fitted up by Fleming, Thomas Jt Co., and will be opened Immediately as a new banking house. The firm will he composed of A. Fleming, Landon A. Thomas, jr., and Frank F.. Fleming. Mrs. Nathan Smith died at Selma Mon day morning, leaving a husband and two little children to mourn their loss. The family hut recently removed from Merid ian, Miss. A Catholic church is to be built at Flor ence. A lot has already been bought for the purpose. The Fayette Journal calls the Marion County Herald, “the sheet published up in the moonshiner’s paradise.” Captain J. F. Whitfield, the popular and efficient attorney of the Louisville and Nashville railroad at Montgomery, cele brated the silver anniversary of liLs mar riage on the 23d. Saturday morning about ! o’clock Charles MeClurkin, a colored man, was found dead in his bed at Ironaton. Dr. E. H. Whitten made an examination and decided that he came to his death from paralysis of tlie heart. Work has begun on the new Presbyte rian church at Anniston. The contract for the wood work has not been let yet,, but will be next week. These people will erect next to the finest church in the city, at a cost of nearly £10,000. Montgomery Dispatch; Colonel R. H. Dawson, president of the board of convict inspectors, says that the state convicts were never in better health at this season of the year. Only one or two deaths have occurred from tho first of April up to the present time, and there are no complaints to make of 111 treatment of convicts either on tho farms or in the mines. Colonel Daw son is a vigilant, active, restless officer. He is said to dream about convicts, so con stantly is his mind employed iu looking aft er their welfare. Heretofore April has been the most sickly mouth in the year in the mines. Klorlitii. There are 406 names on the pay roll of the Ponce de Leon hotel at St. Augustine. The temperance people of Tampa are making strenuous efforts to put down the sale of liquor. Plenty of South Florida pineapples are now being brought to Jacksonville. They readily retail there at 16c. Joseph Robles lias laid off eight acres on Nebraska avenue, near the school house, i at Tampa, for a cemetery. !
