MoNTCiomtBV, Ala., June 9.--The democratic
state convention of Alabama met promptly at 1*2
o’clock to-day in the hall of the house of repre
sentatives. Col. H. C. Tompkins, chairman of
the executive committee, called the convention
to order and mode* eloquent references to Presi
dent Cleveland which were heartily applauded.
H<#. W. F. Foster, ofTuskegee, was made tem
porary chairman, and on taking the chair made
a ringing speech. His references to the candi
dates were enthusiastically received by their
friends.
Owing to contests from three counties, the com
mittee on credentials will not he able to report
until to-morrow morning, when the balloting
will begin. The convention adjourned to 9 o'clock
to-morrow morning.
Great interest centers in the gubernatorial con
test. There are four candidates -Clayton, Daw
son, McKlt-roy and Seay. The convention has
722 delegates anil it is highly probable that the
majority rule will be adopted. All the guberna
torial candidates hold their follow ing and enthu
siasm runs high. The four candidates for guber
natorial honors arc:
Henry I). Clayton, of Barbour county.
N. II. It. Dawson, of Dallas county.
John M . Mc-Kleroy, of Barhoui county.
Thomas Sea)', of Hale county.
The candidates are all here and watching out
for their interests. The canvas-' has been inter
esting, and the people have caught the infection,
judging from tin* way in which the delegates are
embused. All the candidates are holding cau
cuses to-night, and when they go to bed they will
very nearly know how many votes they can count
on the first ballot. The contest has hardly been
.is exciting as the old party contests of the carpet
bagger <lays, but it has the elements of a pretty
fight in it only it is directed at the democratic
nominating convention instead of the August
election; for these 1 hues in Alabama, as in most
of the other southern states, nominat ions make
the subsequent proceedings a tame formality.

A little twelve-months-old white baby is lying
in the house of Hci 11a Hardeman, colored, in this
citv, crPically ill of cholera infantum. The story
of how it came to be there is as follows:
About three mouths ago a woman who gave
her name as Mrs. Fatson Watson came to this
city. She was young, good-looking and compar
atively well dressed. She brought with her an
infant girl about nine months old. She boarded
a short time with a respectable fondly up town,
but a .c-rwards rented u room in the
old Strapper building on Randolph street. She
was very c rcumspect in her bearing and professed
a willing: .* s to work for a living. She said she
belonged to a respectable family named Downey,
who li'. ’ at Alice furnace, near Birmingham,
Ala. She married about two yearn ago and not
long since went with her husband to Opjlika.
After remaining there a week, he abandoned her.
leaving her in destitute circumstances. Daring
her stay here she enlisted the? sympath.es of
several gentlemen, to whom she said she was net
able to earn a living sewing, and they very
naturally gave her assistance.
Two weeks ago last Friday she told one of tin*
gentlemen that she had received money from l
mother and was going to return to Alice forme.e.
The next morning she left.# but not before in r
trunk had been attached to pay the bill she owed
for board when she first came here. She did not
take her child with her, hut left it with SciUa
Hardeman, and sod that site would return in a
few days. She has been gone now nearly three
weeks, and while she has written one or tw< tet
ters say. ng that slit w >u!u be back in a few days,
those who 'are familiar with the case do not
believe she intends to return at
all. The child ha.*-, been attacked by
fact lint and on Tuesday Dr. Gamere
siciun, was called m to treat it. ,
