Most of the Enquirer-Sun readers are familiar with his plans of carp culture and his success in fruit raising is undisputed by your Colum bus readers. Now his attention is given to bee culture. “Yes,” said he to an Enquirer-Sun re porter, “millions of these little laborers work for me every day for nothing and board themselves. I only furnish them a home. I have started now to gather some of the fruits of their labor. Come with me and bring your appetite.” Facing the morning sun fifty hives were filled with the busy workers. “Your hives are not upright,” the re- j porter observed. “No,” said he, “and you may note other differences from any hives you have seen. After no- gotiatious extending over n day and a half Miss Cleveland agreed to assume the ex clusive editorial control of the magazine, it being distinctly understood that no at tempt would be made to make capital out of her former prestige. Another very handy purpose is that it en ables me to open any portion of tile hive without opening the whole. Now I’ll turn tlie cioth back and let you see. Come back; you need not run. They will not. sting. Soon as they are disturbed they be gin to fill themselves with honey and are quiet. Here, you see midway the hive, which is oblong, a partition which divides the hive into two square apartments. One of these contains the brood-nest and honey for the bees through the long winter months. It is filled first. The other is my e ore.” He drew from the hive a frame, the ex- I act thickness of a honey-comb, and about j one foot square. Each frame contained four smaller ones. “This,” said ho, “is to save the honey in nice condition. When one of these frames lias lias been filled and capped, 1 remove it. while it is white as flour, without any d.sturbance among the bees. Further- | more there is no need to take comb or break it loose from the hive until it is ready. Each frame is separate from tin* j others, so that any frame cun lie removed with no breaking loose of the honey. Here is a large frame that contains no small ones. 1 have a few of this kind. Now, in removing this I find it only partly filled. The empty comb is not lost but fitted into the small frames where it is soon finished by the hoes. Another use 1 apply the * frames to is this: When 1 have a sw irm, I , place a full frame into the new hive, and j without hesitation the new swarm will go 1 in and set t > work. The frames are simply ’ made and afford the easiest method of handling the bees.” “Do you ever rob the bees of their win ter store?” asked tin; Enquiuku-Sl n man. “For my own use, no. I was cal led from my breakfast one morning by the report that a swarm was about to leave this hive. I knew it was earl'n r than the usual time, so ] proceeded to investigate the cause. I found the young queen nearly out of her cell. The old queen could not hi permitted to remain; so the workers early set to work to remove her. 1 dispatched one queen and they returned to work. Two queens cannot reign in the same hive. Even the grub of a young queen is closely guarded by the. workers lest the old queen kill it with a sting. “Suppose a queen dies?” “Then I stand n good chance to lose the colony, though in some eases they can lit saved. I place a newly laid egg in the hive of the queen and the workers will manage the rest. They build around the egg a queen’s cell, and after thre.t days, when the egg hatches into a grub, they feed it on royal food, which develops it into a queen. The same egg that makes the queen makes the worker and the drone. On one occasion 1 kept a colony at work for quite awhile by simply sus* end ing the dead queen in the hive.” “Do you find hee culture profitable?” “All i sell is a clear profit. 1 consider my time well paid for in having honey for my ter for over two years, the aim being not illy to procure an intense and steady weak- I right lint, also one that is eliv-ap.
