This commencement promist s to lie one of
the grandest, gayest and most brilliant the

The commencement exercises were usli-

A curious story conies from Indiana, A I
eian near Akron tin other day was setting I
fence-posts when he was surprised to see a
post with which ha was “packing'’ the
bottom of the hole, break through mid dis
ippear from sight. He took his spade and
lug down with the intention of discover
ing where the seemingly bewitched post
; bad gone. A cave was discovered, and he
j procured a ladder and a lantern and de-
| seended. His hair stood on end
, when he saw gathered around on
the ground the forms of twelve men,
while a part of the thirteenth leaned up
against the side of the cavern, one hand
outstretched us if earnestly addressing his
twelve comrades. By the rays of the Tight
of the lantern he examined the bodies and
found them to tie petrified. The cave Is
about twenty feet square and about, nine
feet deep. The remains are believed to be
those of mound builders who attended a
ward caucus several centuries ago, and tin
thirteenth man isdoulitless the inevitable
Lore, who prolonged an unusually dull
speech until his auditors as well as himself
died of old age and turned to stone.

Climatic changes account in part for this;

by pruyer by Uev. Dr. Lane*, of Athens.
Hr. Adams took his u*\t from the l’Jth
versed the 1-4itli psalm: “Tiiat our sons
anay be as plants grown up in their youth.”
The sermon, delivered in a masterly man
ner, and holding tin attention of the large
congregation throughout its delivery, was
full ol beautiful thoughts. Dr. Adams
compared the normal growth of a mam to
that of a plant that grows up as nature has
deer* edj and warm d the young gentlemen
before him against abnormal groxvth caused
by the blighting influences of atheism and
infidelity. He told them lu xv in their col
lege days they had been gliding peacefully
down a quiet stream with luxmiuucc and
beauty on every bank; how noxv they had
reached the mouth of that river, nnd would
soon be on the restless sea of life. He told
them tiny had simply acquired here in
oolloge those intellectual tools v hich they
must use in after tile, lie closed his ser
mon with much good advice, diawing a
touc hing picture of the graduate returning
to his home resolved to spend his life in
devotion to the cause of ULs Master, and
praying that such might be the case
with many.
The music of the choir, composed of the
best musical talent in the city, accompa
nied by a fexv pieces from the Cierman
Fnsileer band of Charleston, S. C., was line
indeed.
SUNDAY NIGHT
Rev. Dr. Adams preached a sermon before
tlie prayer meeting association of the uni
versity. His text was the 13th verse of the
15th psalm : “The king’s daughter is all
glorious within; her clothing is of
wrought gold.” In words of persuasive
eloquence ne spoke of the inward and
outward man, and showed how the char
acter of a true Christian, like the ever-’
current gold, is always recognized. Many
think the sermon of the night equally as
good as the sermon of the morning.
The weather so far has been delightful, !
and there is every prospect that it will |
continue so.
