Mr. Hill is an alumnus of tin- univi rsil v, Ii.'ivIiir graduated in 1870. lie is well known as oneof therisinff younit men of the stale. His address, on n live subject, “The Labor Question,” showed learning and profound thought, and in the midst of a strong array of facts brought forth I here were set gems of beautiful sentiment and sparkling wit; and a large and appreciative audience lis tened with most unremitting attention dur ing the entire delivery. The substance of Mr. Hill's address is os follows: “There are three forms of social agita tion at the present time, anarchy, socialism and the lnhor movement. These must be carefully distinguished in order to prevent confusion of thought and opinion. “Anarchy means the absence of all gov erning authority. It demands full personal liberty. Whether wages I have increased at all is a disputed question. | Nobody claims that there has been any.I proportionate increase, in a sense, the j ‘necessaries of Iife ? mean more than was . meant fifty or a hundred years ago. Labor ! buds itself filling the norld with wealth ; and not sharing in its progress. “2. The contraction between the pro fessed creed of our civilization 'Christian- | ity) and the world’s accepted political j economy. The man who bends on nltish I ucvnshions on Sunday to bear the New Testa- ! ment message, and who goes out on Mon- d«y to practice the rules of political : economy, Ule.stiat stlu* sarcasm ot tJeovge Eliot,‘that men have the ait of aei*epting momentous doctrines without eccentric! I agitation.’ The ‘iron law’ of.wages under 'Competition, vis*., that they constantly tend to the minimum which the laborer will consent to receive and perpetuate the rare, does not sound well la-side the golden rule; acd the people w iu» would get the benefit of Uk golden rule have not la on -slow to set tbe ei ligations it impost s. “3. In tile assumption that mar is to he treated wholly as an viom>ma being,’ that health, good will, comfort, content at home, sentiment, feelings, custom, inertia, etc., have nothing to do with the science, political economy has kept the pari of JJamlet in the play et rtninly, when it de votes its attention to the single desire for wealth, but it has left every other part out. This is wholly unscientific. *‘•1. Great combinations of capital have completely nullified the basis of our old system; competition by combinations, such as pools and corners. “3. The liiianeial waste, municipal cor ruption, due to the domination of the liquor traffic in our cities and tin- part this j ‘dynamite of eivilization’ plays in ail the riots and labor troubles, make it a source of loss, plunder and peril. “Thegreat question for solution is. ‘Has labor any right, above mere wages, in the net product which results from its toil and the use of capital?’ ifnolitical eneoiuuny is true, labor now inlamhly and necessa rily receives in wages under competition I all that it can claim. But the fact is before us that labor claims more." Tile testimony of many practical men. ! among them Mr. Patrick Walsh, of Augusta, was read on this subject, favor ing the existence of such an equity in favor of the laborer. Arbitration virtually con cedes it; otherwise there is nothing to ar bitrate about, and a strike becomes an at tempt at naked spoliation. The gn\em inent by providing for arbitration, and business men and corporations everyw here by consenting to it have practically recog nized such a right. If it exists, the deter- ’ mination of it makes a new element in business ethics and possibly jurisprudence. The speaker gave Ids own views as to the nature and extent of such an equity, but stated that in the unsettled condition oi the question it would be presumptuous to offer what claimed to lie a solution. As means of settling this question, or ganization of labor, arbitration, urotlt shaving and co-operation were all dis- j cussed with examples of each. Under the head ot profit sharing it was shown that these enterprises had always paid well. They g^yc the employees a new relation to the business. They secure then active zeal, interest, good will and loyalty its well as their active labor. Pending the working out of this problem, ! Christianity alone can guide aright the respective parties to it. The question for this century is the same that was addressed to the first—“Burabbas or Christ.” SOPHOMORE EHHIBITION. In the afternoon the sophomore exhibi tion took place. It consisted of declama tion by fifteen members of the sophomore class, chosen for excellence in declama tion. The young gentlemen did well, and opinion is very much divided as to who will be awarded the medals this afternoon. Tw o medals will be awarded to the two best declaimers. The programme was as follows: L. M. Brand, D. S.—[Excused]—Walton countv —Annexation—Corwin. N. R. Broyles, Breckenridge. or four bottles to the above oblige.
