A sliding pad to protect the player's hips and side from cuts, sprains and bruises has been invent ed. I nit the players do not look upon the invention with favor, and few of ' mountains and the Sierra, comprising the territory of Utah and the state of Nevada, is apparently destined tu become thegreat- est cattle range in the country. Already immense tracts of land; some embracing ‘250,000 acres, have been purchased, and owners of large herds in Tt xas and other southwestern states are looking for ranges in tin wide section of natural pasture land. The pressure of settler to engage in agriculture and foun upon tin lands in the great fertile pla or the west HTid south, has begun to crowd out the cattle kings, who have for years monopolized the largest part of the states which by nature an better fitted for the raising of crops than for the pasturage of herds. Thus there has begun a hegira of cattlemen toward the west, which bids fair to aid materially in the development of those wheat sections of our country that have hitherto been left almost exclusively in the hands of Indians and peripatetic grdd hunters. This movement of stock men toward the west is a matter of c on siderable importance to the people of this coast, for the region which will be appropriated by them is by nature tributary to California, which should be benelltted by the estab- ho re member when big Dan Broutliers first began to play base all say that the big first baseman and terrific batter accident ally killed a man in a game. This is the fastest time ever made in the world by a pigeon from the distance of 800 miles or over, the best previous record being nine to ten days, and Hint being in this country. The aotuul distance and time made were 866 miles in four and one-quarter days. The bird has a wonderful record. It is named Sergeant Dunn and is a silver male, and was batched on April 5, 1SS4. It was bred Iron) pure German military stock, imported by Mr. Bennett. Before it was six months'old it flew in different races, under club rules, the great distance of 1582 miles, the last race bung from Mor gantown. N. C., 535 miles air line, this be ing the furthest distance young birds were ever shipped. I luring the season of 18S5 it was left at home to do as it pleased. This season the bird was put on the road again. It was flown from Altoona, Pa., for the j Verinder prize. It was liberated in rainy Weather and did not return fast enough to win. It was again tried in the west, this time from Steubenville. O., 333 miles. The j bird did not come home in good speed and ] Mr. Bennett determined to give up the [ western course. Without further training the bird was 1 shipped hy him, under federation rules, south to Charlotte, N*. C., 518 miles, air line. It returned in excellent shape to Newark, its last trip was the present oue. In all its different races it hns flown the distance of 4s3H miles. Jt flew with only the race secretary’s name and address 1 stamped on its wings. ; Seven men at once arose from their seats. The conductor counted them and withdrew. When the train reached Des Moines a sedate looking man boarded the ear with a basket containing seven oblong, flat packages wrapped in paper, which he sold it fifty cents apiece. “What are those things?” inquired a messenger of the sedate looking man. “Bibles," he replied in a solemn tone, as he opened the door and went out. French statistics just published contain i alarming information concerning the in- j crease ot crime among children of both sexes. The demoralization of the “young idea" has evidently reached a point in j France which demands the serious atten tion of all interested in the luture welfare i of the country. For example, we learn that the number of offenders under six teen years of age has augmented from 2235 to .5579 for boys and from 418 to 908 for 1 girls. From sixteen to twenty-one years of age the number of criminals has in-I creased from 5930 to 20,489 for boys and i from 1040 to 2839 for girls. The ratio ot crime among offenders under age has therefore considerably more than doubled during the past five years. The statistics register for the first time numerous cases j of suicide committed by children. The ( nst uf G Hagerstown, Md.
