Washington, July 81.—Whether the
democrats will lose the next house,
whether they can Rain a majority in the
-wenate by tills winter’s elections ana whom
thM republicans will nominate for the
presidency are matters much debated here
in concessional clonk rooms and in hotel
parlors.
Republicans are hopeful of carrying the
presidency in 1888, but it is a curious fact
that ns they recover hope so they show an
.aversion to trying Mr. Blaine again. “1
shall speak and work for Blaine, and ns
bard as 1 can,” said n prominent republi
can senator. “ We are old friends, and if
be is nominated I shall do all I can to elect
hint; but I hope we shall try some other
man. I want the party to have a good
■•chance of success and no needless obstacles
and I believe we should do better with
some other man.”
That is a Very general opinion among
prominent republican senators and repre
sentatives. They do not express it publicly,
•but in private conversation they do not
conceal that they are not favorable to tak
ing up Mr. Blaine again. And this opinion
is uttered by men who are careful to say
at the same time that they are personally
friendly to Mr. Blaine and believe in him.
But they believe that he would not be a
good cu'ndidate for the party to win with.
LOGAN AND THE FIELD.
If one Inquires about other candidates,
he bears very little. Gen. Bogan isregard-
•ed as* strong man; Mr. Sherman and Mr.
Harrison are well thought of, and Gen.
Hawley has friends. It was remarked b.yla
republican congressman that all these ex

“They will make a vigorous campaign
In their states this fall, 1 guess,” said this
congressman. “Then there's Mr. Hearts,”
he added, “with Iiah usual luck he hies no
senatorial election to carry; he’s been a
very fortunate man, your Mr. Everts. ”
As lo the congressional elections, it
seems on the whole probable, to the best
party judges of both sides, that the demo
crats "..ill retain control of the house, but
by a diminished majority.

to go to this expense, seein’s my salary

don’t mean about offices, for that goes for

will gain. I do not think it safe to count
anything there. Kansas is solid republi- | Pectorai|Muscies instiimly relTev

gain anything in Kentucky. We may gain
one in Louisiana ami we may lose one in
Maine, where the canvass is - going to be
very severe, and tlie democrats are putting
up for congress one or two strong men.
There will be no changes in Maryland or
Massachusetts. But in Michigan tlie dem
ocrats are badly broken tip. The tight
between the Dickinson wing of their party
and the other side is bitter. Tlie delega
tion now stnmls seven democrat* to four
republicans, and 1 believe we may be able
to reverse that and make a gain of three.
Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada,
New Hampshire and New Jersey will not
change, 1 think. In New York, 1 am told,
we may gain four seats. The delegation
now stands seventeen to seventeen. I
doubt if we gain more than four. The
democrats are pretty badly split up into
k Cleveland and Hill factions, but they must
| work together on congressmen. North
Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island and South
Carolina will scarcely change. Ohio is
badly broken up politically on both sides
and lias been redistrieted besides. I think
we shall gain three seats there, and we
may gain one in Pennsylvania and one,
