On the completion of the shell road a bicycle club will be organized at Bruns wick by about twenty young men. It has been decided to carry an artesian water pipe into the union depot at Atlanta for the benefit of the traveling public. t Some of the negroes of Albany are very much exercised over the talk of a war with Mexico. They are afraid they will be drafted. On Tuesday next the grand encampment and on next Wednesday the grand lodge of Odd Fellows of this state will convene in annual session in Atlanta. The property of Coweta appears on the tax returns to be 1*243,000 more than in 1S85, and that in spite of the fact that the county has shrunk 0000 acres of land. Samuel Weil, Esq., and Welborn Brav are announced as candidates for the legis lature in Fulton county. Tobe Jackson is proving to be a regular elephant to his Atlanta jailers. He has tried to break jail several times, end gets up revolts among the other prisoners. Frank Humphries, who, in March last, murdered his sister-in-law and another ladv in Baldwin county, was sentenced to be hung by Judge Lawson on Saturday, the execution to take place September 24. Humphries was stolid and unmoved dur ing the delivery of the sentence. Mary Ilurd, of Atlanta, has poisoned Mary Brooks and the latter’s granddaugh ter, Lizzie Simmons. Both the latter are dead. All the parties are colored. There is great excitement among the negroes over the affair. * Sheriff Overby, ofOconee, passed through Athens Tuesday with Joe Ward, who is deranged and on his way Vo the asylum. Ward had accumulated a little capital of $2000 by hard work and economy, and was induced to iuvest it in the mercantile busi ness in Atlanta, where lie soon lost his last cent. It so preyed on bis mind that lie went deranged. Sunday Rev. Mr. Weed, of Augusta, preached his farewell sermon to his con gregation ou the Hill. St. Paul church was closed in consequence. He lias been their pastor for fifteen years and is greatly beloved by all classes for his religious in fluence and kind heart and charity, and the poor will miss him most. He left with his family last evening. To-morrow he will be bishop of Florida. Many prayers and best wishes attend him in his new call ing. Daily Madisonian: 'Governor McDaniel will retire from office enjoying as little ad verse criticism as that of any one of his predecessors. We art- frank to say that while he did some things we could not approve, and so stated at the time, that in the main he has not only made a good but exceptionally good governor. His fealty to party cannot be questioned, and his pure private life and conscientious public acts nave won for him the admiration and con fidence of his people. Aliilmnm. The residence of T. M. Murphree \vm burned at Troy Thursday eyening. Joe Basclift and Fayette Julian fought with knives near Blount svilh Wednesday. Basclift was dangerously stabbed. Mr. A. ,T. Alexander, of Mobile, a senior i in the college at Auburn, was married there to Miss Leila McXatnee. a pupil In j the female school, on Thursday. A Birmingham dispatch, dated Thurs day, says: Shortly after nopn to-day the Chronicle posted a bulletin, saying that President Cleveland bad called congress ' together to take action with reference to j the complications with Mexico. ThJ- was; generally taken to mean war, and in a few j minutes the news was on the tongue ot j every man you met on the streets. On all | sides young men were wanting to be put | down for soldiers. No doubt several line companies would be raised here. A correspondent writing from Talladega ; to the Montgomery Awertisi r. under date ! of August 12. says: Jesse Cmikshu uk, col- ored, attempted lo ravish a little seven- , year-old white girl, Carrie Woods, He had just thrown her down when a colored woman, Minerva Darby, who is keeping the child, its mother being dead, came up ; and found the negro on the child and sm crying. Tlie negro admits the guilt- -■ poclietbook and some ribbons was given her not to cry. Great indignation prevails, but the fear of a mob is groundless, a- the station of the child can hardly muster ' enough friends to hang the negro, out j there is certain to he a public necKtn so- , cial iu the near future. L>r. Boswell nays j the child is not hurt, but the evidence is damaging and strong. c °'° ( r ' ?d Presbyterians, corner of Laura and State streets, Jacksonville, is gradually wal^fori tovvnrd8 completion. The belle of the Branch has a black eve. it might naturally be supposed that such a sad condition of affairs would interfere somewhat with her enjoyment of the mid- summer gayeties of this fashionable resort, but it has an entirely different effect, and added to instead of lessened her populari* ty. No girl ever wore a beauty spot with i such fascinating grace or carried her dim pled chin with siich charming hauteur as 1 ‘his merry little maiden from Gotham does a big patch of black coloring that en circles her right eye. There isn’t a girl at ! the Branch that doesn’t envy her the dis tinction that she has gained through it, and any number of them would take a black eye to-morrow if they felt sure of their ability to turn such an unsightly spec tacle into a badge of beauty and attractive ness. But it so happened that the particu lar young lady who owns this injured optic is just thejolhest sort of a girl imaginable, and she would probably make ns merry over nn accident of any kind, ns long as it didn't keep her away from the boys, as sire is over her present disaster. Xogencral ever turned defeat into victory with so much tact, for instead of spoiling her summer’s fun it has made her the most talked about girl at the Branch, and : brought her conquests by the dozen. She is never on the porch with less than two beaux, and there is such a regiment of ! them constantly dancing- attendance upon her that she can allot to each but a very I small portion of her time. The accident I that gave her this badge of beauty oc curred over at the race-course. She was ! thrown from her carriage, and, while her companion was painfully injured, she es- ; eaped with a discolored eye and a short spell of unconsciousness'. “Oh, isn't this dreadful?” she exclaimed when I she came to herself. “What ! will the boys say? I can’t go to the dance to-night!” Just the same when she reach ed the hotel and held a council of war with herself she resolved to go to the ball and risk the danger of humiliation and dismay. But her very bravo in defying the gossip of her girl friends turned the tide, in her favor and her engagement card was filled for every dance before she had been In the room a quarter of an hour. Since then she has been the belle of the hotel. She goes everywhere and does everything, from bathing and tennis in the morning to dancing and a supper over at Pleasure Bay at night. At the proprietor’s ball last Thursday at the West End she appeared in a handsome oielblue, low cut anu a group of diamonds glittering in a pendant from her necklace. The tmiJn-adinired eye was circled with the usual patch of black; but she had it 1 ainted during the afternoon, and it looke d very much as if the little witch had spread the paint much lower than necessary, just to show that the black was still there. She says she is going to Saratoga this week, ; and the beaux at the Summer Spa will have an opportunity to see the only young woman who has ever made a black eye de sirable.—Long Branch Letter.
