After a lengthy correspondence we have se-
amination that Col. Peabody, who is president
, of the Columbus and Greenville railroad, said
that he thought the railroad authorities would
bear half the expense of grading and placing in
good condition the roads entering town from the
east and north. If this be true, advantage ought
certainly to he taken of the liberal proposition.

Galveston, 1:45 a. m., August 20.—A
violent easterly gale prevails here, the
wind blowing at the rate, of forty-five miles
an hour and constantly increasing in
velocity. The whole southern and south
eastern portion of the city is inundated by
water, and many families have been driven
out and compelled to seek safety and shel
ter at hotels down town. The street rail- ,
way along the beach has been torn up nnd
the waters of the gulf are now breaking
over the lower gallery of the Beach Hotel.
Much apprehension is felt for families re
siding at exposed points, and for shipping
anchored in the outer roads. Heavy dashes
of rain are falling occasionally, and the
night is intensely dark.
