Charley Brooks, a young man of East
Macon, has been deserted by his wife.
Hon. J. F. Brannan was nominated
Wednesday at Millen, Ga., as senator of
the seventeenth senatorial district.
The Walton News says it is understood
Governor McDaniel will return to Monroe
to reside when bis term of office expires.
Linsey Cleveland was convicted in the
county court of Elbert under a charge of
watermelon stealing, and sent to the chain
gang for three months.
Judge Clark has granted a new trial in
the case of George Vaughn and Joseph
Smith, recently convicted of grave robbing
in Decatur.
Over one hundred emigrants leave the
vicinity of Adairsville for Texas this
month, among them Terrie Speed, the
famous hunter and trapper.
Work of laying the concrete foundation
of the government building at Macon will
begin Monday, the contract for broken
stone having been awarded to M. E.
Mayer, of Atlanta.
W. C. Lyons, a well known cotton ship
per of Savannah, was completely pros
trated by heat Wednesday, and it was
some time before he recovered. This is
the first case this season.
At a meeting of the board of trustees of

Vaus Creek Baptist church, at Ruckers-
ville, in Elbert county, will have a cen- :
tennial celebration in October next. The
church was organized in 1785, but the cele
bration for some cause was postponed till

The storehouse of Mr. George W. John
son, in Georgetown, was broken into last
Sunday night, and a quantity of goods
stolen. Two dollars in silver, left in the
money drawer, was also taken and the
safe was robbed of ?300.
The citizens of, McDonough, in a meet
ing, resolved to build a college, and so
much taken with the idea were they that
all the shares but a very few were sub
scribed for before the meeting adjourned.
The building will be a good one, of brick,
and v^ill be begun as soon as possible.
Mr. W. J. Camp, of Chapel Hill, has one
of the finest crops ever seen on upland in
this section of Georgia, lie lias in one
field fifteen acres of cotton that will, if the j
season continues as favorable as hereto- j
fore, make fifteen bales of cotton.
A fire occurred on the outskirts of Au- j
gusta Wednesday and destroyed four small
dwellings occupied by negroes, and a ;
small store and eating saloon owned by
John Samuels. Tlie loss is about $2500, \
fully covered by insurance.
A five-legged kitten was on exhibition in ;
Dallas one day last week. In walkinftft :

clue to the murderer, mid efforts to dis
cover and arrest the criminal were una
vailing. Wednesday Gov. McDaniel of
fered a reward of one hundred and fifty
dollars for the arrest and conviction of the
unknown murderer.
The democratic congressional conven
tion of the second district met in Camilla,
Wednesday. The majority rule was adopt
ed, after warm debate, and II. G. Turner
was nominated on the first ballot. The
vote was H. G. Turner, 20 3-5; J. 11. Guer-
ry, 4 2-5; R. G. Mitchell, 4, W. I. Jones, 2.
The sixth senatorial convention met at
Valdosta. Monday. -Messrs B. F. Whit
tington, B. E. Jones, W. S. West and J. W
Harrell were put in nomination. Seven
failed to result in a choice and the
ballots
name of Captain llamp Smith was brought
in and nominated on the eighth ballot.
Captain Smith is one of tlie strongest men
in the district and his nomination meets
with general satisfaction.

Mr. Pugh, Montgomery's wounded po
liceman, is thought to bo getting well.
Over 6300,000 worth of real estate changed
hands in Birmingham oil Wednesday.
There ure now five operators employed in
the Western Union office at Birmingham.
The walls of the Jewish synagogue at
Birmingham are up, and the entire build
ing will be completed in a short time.
LaFayette college opens its fall session
next Monday. The prospects for a fine
school are flattering.
Mobile had her first fire for three months
on Wednesday, when a residence belong
ing to Miss Kate Toennis was burned.
The Elyton Land Company at Birming
ham has withdrawn its real estate from
the mnrket for a week.
The residence of Captain R. F. Kolb, at
Eufaula, was destroyed by fire Wednesday-
morning. The house was insured for jlOOO,
and the loss is estimated at .*2o00.
Prince Albert has been arrested in Selma
for stealing a woman’s wardrobe. This
member of the royal family is a black
prince.

Work was begun Wednesday on a six
mile extension of the Anniston and Atlan
tic railroad. This will bring it to Syla-
cauga, on the line of the Georgia Cential s
g rojected extension from Goodwater to

Twenty acres of land lying between Bir
mingham and Woodlawn, near the latter
place, were sold Wednesday for ,1000 Der
acre. Who the purchasers were or what
they intend doing with it remains for the
present a secret.
A foundation of rock has been found for
the piers of the west Alabama bridge over
the Bigbee at Jackson, Ala. The cars will
be running to Jackson within the next
three months, and the bridge will prob
ably be completed by March 1.
The Birmingham Fire Brick Company,
whose works are one of the biggest things
in Birmingham outside of iron, have
broken ground for a large extension. 1 nov
now have two ovens. Four are to be add-
. ed. Their capacity, now half a million oi
brick a month, will be increased propor-
