A WONDERFUL DESK.
Tlirontfli Which City .Mcrchmili. Can IVIiIsih-
With Sow Turk ami llnaton.
New Haven Register.
Work is now being done which will
soon make it possible for merchants in
this city to set a cosy little desk in their
counting-rooms and talk without rlsln
with people in New York Boston ann
Philadelphia as well as with every sub
scriber ol the Southern New England 'l'c|.
ephone Company. A copper circuit lias
already been completed between New
York and Boston, and the wires are fust
approaching Philadelphia. Instead of the
ordinary telephone at the wall tin
subscriber can be furnished with n
beautiful rosewood desk about the size of i
ladies’ writing desk, with plenty of room
to write upon, and with several drawers
for papers. The desk conceals the big
magnet which operates the bell and also
the other mechanism of a powerful tele
phone, except two silver warning bells and
the transmitter. The transmitter with a
silver mouth piece about the size of a silver
dollar is held by a metallic arm which is
so arranged that it can be moved to raise
or lower the mouth-piece several feel
By an automatic device the transmitter is
also kept in the same relative position to
the mouth at whatever position it is sot.
The only other thing which shows that
the desk is not a gentleman’s ordi
nary office furniture is a little movable
bar witli four metallic switches. By this
device the subscriber nuts himself out of
the city oircuit and switches himself onto
the main line for New York or Boston
■which he rings up and calls a New York or
Boston subscriber with less trouble than is
caused to call a subscriber in the same city.
The copper circuit is perfect and free from
induction. A Register reporter recently
talked from the executive office of the
Southern New England Telephone Com
pany to New York over it. Although the
wire passes through lengthwise the whole
noisy city of New York, a whispered con
versation there was more easily heard than
the ordinary city telephoning.
Hay Fever is a type of catarrh having pe
culiar symptoms. It is attended by an in
flamed condition of the lining membrane of
the nostrils, tear-ducts and throat,affecting
the lungs. An acrid mucus is secreted, the
discharge is accompanied with a burning
sensation. There are severe spasms of
sneezing, frequent attacks of headache,
watery and inflamed eyes. Ely’s Cream
Balm is a remedy that can be depended
upon. 50 cts. at druggists; by mail, regis

An Austin merchant who had failed, sev

went to the latter’s residence, determined
to get the money. He was met at the
door by Sam Johnsing, who had orders to

“Is Col. Yerger in ? ”
“What does yer want? ”

Have you been sick ? Is your convalos-
ence slow and tedious ? Then try a bottle
of Westmoreland’s Calisaya Tonic, and
take as directed. It will soon make you
strong and well again.
Greenville, S. C., July 14, 1884.
Messrs. Westmoreland Bros.—Gentle
men : I bought a bottle of your Calisaya
Tonic some time ago for my little daughter,
seven (7) years old, who was at that time
suffering with general debility and loss of
appetite. Your Tonic was given as direct
ed, and she is now entirely well j has a
good appetite, sleeps well and has regained
her strength. Her complexion has re
sumed its usual rosy color. I don’t hesi- ;
■fate to recommend the Touicto any one as ;
being, in my opinion, very superior.
Very respectfully,
M. S. Scruggs,
Book-keeper Camperdown Mills. ,
A gentleman in this city has used the
remedy for a fifteen months old child with
perfect, success. The Tonic is just as bene
ficial to children as to grown people.

Soothing Syrup should always be used
when children are cutting teeth. It re
lieves the little sufferer at once; it produces
natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child
from pain, and the little cherub awakes a-
“bright as a button.” It is very ple^ant
to taste. It soothes the child, softens the
gums allays all pain, relieves wind, regu-

remedy for diarrhoea, whether arising
from teething or other causes. Twenty

Worthy of a Trial.
A lady of our acquaintance lias been in
quite feeble health for many years with
some complaint, peculiar to the sox—be
came emaciated—lost her appetite—was
melancholy—sleepless— cross and fretful.
Many years’ suffering indicated that all
medicines were a failure. Some one sug
gested the use of the Simmons’ Iron Cor
dial, which could be applied locally. After
using two or three bottles an astonishing
change was observed, and a complete cure
was soon effected. eod&w

will waltz; I prefer it.”—The French.
Excitement in Texas.
Great excitement lias been caused in the
vicinity of Paris, Texas, by the remarkable
recovery of Mr. J. E. Corley, who was so
helpless he could not turn in bed, or raise
his head; everybody said he was dying of
consumption. A trial bottle of Dr. King’s
New Discovery was sent him. Finding re
lief, lie bought a large bottle and a box of
Dr. King’s New Life Pills; by the time he
had taken two boxes of Pills and two bot
tles of the Discovery, he was well and had
gained in flesh thirty-six pounds.
