TUB KEYNOTE FOR 1888.
The opinion seems to be deeply rooted
that the present political battle on the
part of the republicans is the preliminary
skirmishing of the national campaign of
1888. The horde of distinguished men in
the state make no concealment of the fact
that the tight for Bodwcll is a continuance
«f the Blaine campaign of two years ago.
CHAIRMAN MANLEY’S HOPES.
Your correspondent was at the head
quarters of the republican state committee
to-day and hud abl'ief talk with Chairman
Manley, who is running the Bodwell cam
paign. Knowing ones in the city uiflrm
that it was Manley, at Blaine’s instigation,
who caused Bodwell to consent to ho a j pounds.”
candidate against his own inclinations. In I
referring to the outlook he said that every
thing presaged u glorious republican vic
tory. The vote for Bodwell would be
.about the same as that oast in 1882 for
Itobie, who was elected by 8500 plurality.
Bodwoll’s plurality would he as much if
not more. “We shall return our delega
tion to congress,” he added, “b.y our usual
large majorities, and next winter Senator
Halo will be re-elected without any oppo
sition in the party.”
The rugged fact, however, cannot bo
disguised that tho republican managers
are not having such smooth sailing,as they
pretend. A source of danger Is the pro
hibition party. Although numbering hut
a mere handful of voters, their leaders are
very aggressive and are attacking the re
publican party in a very savage style on
account of the alleged duplicity of its
ieuders on the prohibition question.
THE LIQUOR QUESTION.
One of the great complaints raised by
these prohibitionists who wish to deluge
the state with cold water is that Hie re
publicans are derelict In duty in enforcing
the liquor law, especially in the cities.
The republican leaders reply that the law
is as well enforced us any other statute for
the punishment of crime, and undertake
to snow that there is no good ground for
the charges made that the party which
gave birth to prohibition and adopted it
as one of the fundamental principles of its
creed has gone hack on it. Thus the light
goes on increasing daily in intensity of
feeling. Air. Blaine declares: “1 am
going to vote so as to preserve prohibi
tion In Maine.” But this is no new con
fession, as lie has always voted that way
since the republican party was horn in
.Maine.
HLAINK AS A PROHIBITIONIST.
Mr. Blaine’s opposition to the prohibit- '
or.v movement on the ground that its j
tendency is to throw the stute into the
hands of the democrats and give the peo-j
pie free rum, is undoubtedly preventing a
good many stanch temperance republicans
who really sympathize with the third party j
from casting their fortunes with it. There
is also another class among tlie.se republi
can prohibitionists who are kept within
party lines on the strength of Mr. Blaine's ,
argument that, t he imposition of a heavy 1
whisky tax would not only be the means
of decreasing the consumption of liquor,
but, being in the nature of a tine, would
ultimately squelch the manufacture of
whisky bv taxing it to death. The role
that Mr. Blaine is playing on the subject of
prohibition shows the great republican
leader to be a prohibitionist in state poli
ties, while in national polities his position
is undefined. The prohibitionists under
St. John and Dow may not succeed in
drawing much of a vote from the republi
can party, but it is apparent that they are
causing its leaders a heap of trouble.
THE DEMOCRATS SOMNOLENT.
The democrats appour to be sound asleep.
They have no money in the party strong.
*mx to make a lighting campaign, and,
what is worse, tho best of feeling does not
exist um.mg the leaders on account of the
way the olnces have been tilled. The dis
appointed ones cannot conceal their dis
gust with the administration. The rank
and file ire all right, and probably will not
be unmindful of their duties on tlie day of
election. Chairman Brown has done'the
best he. could to organize the parly and to
put speakers into the field, lie and Harry
Clifford are about the only leaders who
have really put on their war paint. The
congr.-ssioiial fight between Clifford and
Tom Reed in the first district is becoming
quite lively. This is the only district ,
in which the democrats have anv hope of \
electing u congressman. They count on 1
receiving the largest share of the labor
vote. The democrats in the first district,
us well as throughout the state, are taking
u remarkaide interest in the third party
movement. It is remarkable because the
Maine democracy is opposed to prohibition,
and, were they to get into power, would
undoubtedly enact u license law as the
fruit of t heir victory. As plurality elects
in Maine, every vote the prohibitionists
take from the republicans helps the demo
crats. This accounts for the milk in that
coeoanut.

Hartford Times.
September, the first calendar month of
tho autumn, introduces us to what is in
our country doubtless the most beautiful
*v.‘T. 'ins! season known to any land. This
lir-t of , .i autumn mouths is not apt to bo !
strikingly characteristic of the season, dur- !
ing at least the first half or more of ns
course: it brings us only a prolonged, more I
golden-tuned August- a succession of the
year’s “halcyon days.” September, in our
elimate, is apt to be largely a calm, sun
shiny month, redolent of ripened apples 1
and pears, and marked by pleasant harvest
scenes. The strident insect chorus in the
grass is now, at the month’s beginning, at
its fullest, loudest pitch, and in the hushes
and trees, in some localities, the katydids
are in full voice. Not this year, here- ;
abouts, but generally, the month’begins and
goes on without rain, and the roads and
country fields get very dusty. The sun
rises and sets like a great disk of burnish
ed copper, in skies that seem hazy, not
from any cloud formations, but from a dry
haze, the thick sultry air of tho departing
summer. Behind the old orchard, on the
downward slope of the hill, comes up the
•‘harvest moon,” rising large and red—and
it maintains its apparent size, and nearly
the same time of rising, night nfter night,
lor several nights. No other month brings

S. S. S. vs. POTASH.
T have had blood poison for ten years. I know I have taken one hundred bottles of
Iodide of potash in that time, but it did me no good. Last summer my fnco, neck, body
•and limbs were covered with sores, and I could scarcely use my arms on account of rheu
matism in my shoulders. I took S. S. S., ami it bus done me more good than all other medi
cine** I have taken. My face, body and neck arc perfectly clear and clean, and my rheu
matism is entirely gone. I weighed 110 pounds when I began the medicine, und I now weigh
152 pounds. My first bottle helped me greatly, and gave me an appetite like a strong man.
I would not be without S. S. S. for several times its weight in gold.
