Among the many communicative spirits
Invoked ny spiritualistic mediums in Bos
ton Is what claims to be an Indian maiden,
whose name in lift! was Lotela. In a re
cent Interview through a medium, Lotela,
It is claimed, brought messages from the
spirit world from several persons who in
life were well known in thiB cit^r. ^ They
are published in the Banner of
tecent date. One message was from the
late P. G. Conway. It reads as follows:
“Now Lotela sees three or four spirits
grouped together; they are all braves-
men. The firat one Lotela can get Into
communication with best, and he gives
the name of P. G. Conway. He wasn’t 50
years old; he was getting along toward it,
lie says. He left a family on this side; he
wants to get to them If he can. He
has been out of the body three
years; it will be three years day after to
morrow, for he says it was the 3d day of
June. He comes back with a sort of anni
versary greeting to his friends. This spirit
Was a fireman when he was here; he helped
put out burning places and get the people
out if there were anv in them. Now Lotela
sees the word Hall, then another word.
Jackson. Now we see “eighteen.” Hail
Jackson Fire Company No. 18. It is way
down south where ne conies from. That’s
where he belonged to, too. He wants to
send his love to his family. He would
like to talk with some of them about per
sonal matters that affected them ut the
time of his death, but he don’t want to do
it before all the people. Home time he
hopes to get to them through a medium
down that way, so he enn do as he wishes
to. Besides sending his love to his people
he wants to send greeting, he says, to the
boys in the fire company and tell them he’s
high up on the ladder, out of the reach of
the smoke and flame.”
P. G. Conway was a prominent man in
this community and was a levee contrac
tor. He joined Jackson Fire Company
No. 18 some time in the (10’s, and was an
active and brave fireman. He served his
time on the active roll six years, and be
came an exempt. He undertook and exe
cuted a number of contracts for Improving
the city, among others the paving of Canal
street to Claiborne from Franklin street.
He was a sufferer from inflammatory
rheumatism, and died from the effects of
this disease, leaving a widow and four chil
dren, all grown. He was a fow months
older than 49 years at the time of his death,
and according to the statembnt of his son-
in-law died either late on the night of
June 2 or early in the morning of June 3,
1883. The older members of Jackson Fire
Company No. 18 remember him well, and
will be delighted to hear that their old
comrade is doing well in the other world,
and would like to send him greeting in
return if they know how to go about it.
Mr. Conway s widow and children still re
side in the city.
The next communication from the spirit
of the Indian girl wns from P. Coats. It
was as follows: “Lotela told you she saw
three or four together. Now me can see
another spirit, who stands right behind
that one. He comes fYom the same place,
and I think he belonged to the same fire
company. I get the name of P. Coats. He
went out just a little while before the first
one, in tno same year, and he joins in
greeting too. He wants all the friends to
know he lives, and he says they are trying
to make a stir among the friends, because
they want them to know there is no such
thing ns death.”
Peter Coats was a member of Jackson
Fire Company No. 18, and
according to the records in the
office of the Firemen’s Charitable
Association, in the City Hall, was recorded
as having died on the 28th of April, 1883.
He was a locksmith and an iron safe man
ufacturer, and was at one time working
with his brother, now of the firm of Hag-
stette &'Coats, of this city.
The third and last communication is
from a man named Gallagher, who was
also a fireman, but not a member of No.
13. This communication is as follows :
11 And now two others come up. They
stand a little apart from these first two
spirits, and Lotela can’t get so clearly from
_ them wlmt they want to give, but the
name is Gallagher; both have the same
name; one is a good deal younger than the
other; it looks to Lotela as though one
was the sire of the other. They were fire
men, too. They come to their people in
the same place, New Orleans, and send love.
They have been trying to get to one young
person who belonged to them and bring
ner assistance and encouragement, and
they nre helping their people all they
can. Lotela can’t get their first names.”
In the two first eases the information
conveyed through the medium is correct;
as to the last, thus far the Gallaghers have
not been identified.
Mrs. Conway, the widow of the late P.
G. Conway, was shown the alleged mes
sage from her husband. She does not be
lieve In spirit manifestations, and says that
the message is doubtless some trick of a
§ retended medium. Her husband really
ied at li:60 o’clock on the night of the 2d
of June, 1883, and therefore not on the 3d
of June. But she states that the death
notice appeared in the papers here on the
morning of the 3d of June, and in the same
issue wns the notice of Jackson Fire Com
pany No. 18. In official notices the fire
companies head them hall of such and
such company, and her husband’s death
notice had doubtless been treasured up to
be used as occasion might dictate. All the
information contained in the alleged mes
sage. she says, was in the death notices of
her husband, and ns iar as leaving any
business not transacted, she does not know
any.
There is another message from a young
man, who bore the name of Bailey IT.
Strong, and wns said to have died on Phil
lip street, in this city.

Golden's Improved Iron Screw Cotton Press,
This cut is an illustration of “Golden** Improved Iron Ncrew Cotton Press,-’
erected in the most substantial and convenient manner. It is simple in construction, and so well
illustrated by the cut, that scarcely a word is needed by way of explanation. Being simply an
Iron Ncrew and Bint substituted for wood, the wood work of its construction, and the manner
of operating it, are substar stantially the same as in the old style of wooden plantation screw, but
the timbers required are not so heavy or long. Most planters of experience prefer the wooden screw
to any of the more modern Cotton Presses in use, but the difficulty and uncertainty of controlling
labor and mechanical skill in the season of the year most convenient to the planter for their erec
tion, usually renders it a matter of economy, as well as necessity, with him, to buy some kind of
Press that*requires but little mechanical skill to put it in operation. “Golden’* Screw,” is a
sort of compromise between the old style of wooden screw and the modern Cotton Press, combining
the principal advantages of the former with the convenience and economy of the latter. It can be
operated with greater facility than the wooden screw, and the rapidity*of its performance, like that
of the wooden screw, or any other press, depends upon its management—as on the old style screws
some planters would pack ten bales, and others thirty or thirty-five bales per day. Any ordinary
mechanic who can make a good plantation gate, or common plow stock, can do the wood work.
Within the last eleven years we have made and sold a great many of these screws, and have yet
to hear of the first one that has not given entire satisfaction.
We furnish all the Iron Work for these Screws, of which we make two sizes, and fully warranted.
