m DAILY ENQUIRER • SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER HI, 1886. 'iw JAEHNE'S CLERK. IlcmltUnr™ Knljlny, Ilf lid urns l<> Sew Vork ami Make* Uiie*(iertoil IlIxt'loauri'H About Ills Km- lilnjor. New York, September 12.—Pour months .ago, just as he was wanted ns u witness in the supreme court, Boodle Alderman Joehne’s couiidentiiU clerk, Alter, disap peared. He went away at Jaime’s com mand and paid his expenses with Jaehne’s money. When the latter whs exhausted be was unable to obtain more, and accord ingly sneaked back to this city with the intent of “squeezing” the'aldermen and members of Jaehne’s fam ily. He had been here a week when lie was arrested, and he has made an interest ing confession concerning his employer’s method as a business man and a statesman His statement includes an admission that his testimony before t.he senate investiga ting committee was totully false. When Alter went into Jaehne’s emplov, in 1877 the latter was in Europe, doing tho effete monarchs in partnership with two notorious thieves, Andy Curtin and Jim Stewart. The precious pair collared the stuff aud Jaehne disposed of it here. When the alderman was arrested, he transferred his business to Alter, but main tained a lively interest in the property During the spring lie compelled Alter to throw a large quantity of valuable silver plate into the North river, as well as a costly edition of Shakespere. Alter says that Jaehne’s fine watch was stolen from a German steamer as she lay at her pier in Hoboken. He further' declares that Jaehne has $100,000 on deposit in his safe to pay over to certain aldermen interested in the Broadway franchise, and that his store was a rendezvous for the statesmen when they were not overcrowded with the requirements of public service. Wiien Alter went away Jaehne promised to look after Alter’s invalid mother, as well as to supply him with money to live upon, and both these things he failed to do, and Al ter became discouraged. He looks and acts like a total wreck, but the report of his arrest has startled the indicted aider- men, and since his confession new precau tions have been taken to prevent any of them from escaping. A flrutoful t'om'NiMHiilrnt. When a recipient of a bottle writes as enthusiastically of the virtues of Calisaya Tonic as did a daughter in a letter to her father recently, it can only mean that the Tonic is the best on the market. The let ter came from Wilmington, N. C. The writer, after referring to the extraordinary aud wearing nature of her household duties recently, says: “lam confident that I never should have held out had it not been for the bracing effects of the admira ble Tonic.” Again the writer Savs: “Iain proud of Greenville’s sons. Long live Dr. Westmoreland, and may his name be wide famed for the preparation of so excellent and palatable a medicine.” » * * Sev eral other highly complimentary refer ences arc made in the letter to the splen did effects of the Tonic. For a long time I Vfgs afflicted with a pain under my right shoulder blade ; I also had considera ble difficulty in breathing. I applied an Allcock’ls Porous Piaster on my back, and one on my chest. I kept changing them overy four days, and at the end of three weeks was entirely cured. eod&w E. S. Stevens, Aa llonest Man Flails flip Wallet. Philadelphia, September 12.— The wallet containing over $7000, lost by Bank Bunner Bobeson while riding on a street car yesterday afternoon, was found in the roadway by a teamster named John Gal lagher and was returned to the bank intact this afternoon. Gallagher’s honesty was well rewarded. He had kept the wallet all night, not knowing what to do with it until he read the newspapers this morning. Advice to Mothers.—Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup should always be used when children are cutting teeth. It re lieves the little sufferer at onee; it produces natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child from pain, and the little cherub awakes as ■“bright as a button.” It is very pleasant to taste. It soothes the child, softens the gums, allays all paiu, relieves wind, regu lates the bowels and is the best l^nown remedy for diarrhoea, whether arising from teething or other causes. Twenty- five cents a bottle. jel7 d&wly ItONsa to lip Miide a Puke. The Russian government bus extended a kindly invitation to O’Donovan Rossa to take up his residence in St. Petersburg. Marshall, a merchant in rlnynsville, and well known in Houston county Ga., has this to say about the "best of all rheumatic remedies:” r oo Ve * )een a sufferer from rheumatism ■ , ,years■ 1 am now sound and well; six bottles or Swift’s Specific cured me. 1 write tills in the hope that others may profit by my experience.” Another Sufferer. For six years I was afflicted with chronic rheumatism, part of the lime perfectly helpless, not beingable to walk at all. For a while my lelt leg was drawn backward until nearly doubled. It luvd a number of running sores on it. Physicians gave me no relief. I tried every patent medicine recommended for rheumatism, being a druggist myself, lull to no profit. At last I ‘•oimnenoed the use of Swift’s Specific. At first it scorned to make me worse. My leg was murli swollen, and I had a physician to lance it. I soon began to improve. Af- ter taking less than a dozen bottles of swift s Specific, 1 found myself sound and well for the first time in six years. That was five mouths agp ; 1 have felt no symp toms of the disense since. A local assembly of Knights of Labor in New York the other day ordered 450 men in a shoe manufactory to stop work at noon. Themenobeyed without knowing why the order w T as issued. In the evening they found out that it was because of a re fusal of their employers to grant ail in crease in their wages which they had decided not to ask for, but which had been demanded for them without their knowl edge by the local assembly of knights, of which a few of them were members. Such an act, of course, involves thousands of dollars of loss, both to the firm and the workingmen, on the one hand, while on the other it strikes sensible people as another illustration of the crying necessity for some sort of reform of the organization whereby the criminal foolB who run the local assemblies may be brought lip with a round turn.
