The liquor dealers’ association of Savan nah has nominated candidates for the leg islature. P'E. W. Glenn BhOt and killed James J. Couch at Griffin about midnight Saturday night. Work on the Union Point and White Plains railroad has been stopped for an indefinite period. The earthquake has frightened seven hundred negroes into joining the Baptist churches at oavannah. Mr. T. J. Threlkeld, one of the largest buyers of cotton in Griffin, died at 12 o’clock Friday night. He was about 70 years of age. A. J. Wlllcox was killed by his nephew, B. F. Wlllcox, in Hazlehurst, Appling county, Saturday. The difficulty grew out of a law suit. The republicans of Ware county met at Waycross Saturday and endorsed F. B. Sirmans, democratic nominee for the sen ate, and L. Allison for the house. The books of registration of the public schools at Rome closed Saturday ufter- noon. In the white school 125 were regis tered, and in the colored school 250. At the drawing off of North’s mill pond, eight miles south of Jonesboro, a white man named Bartow Crawley was shot and killed in a general fight. From what can be gathered he and his friends were the aggressors. Bud Leech and H. Lomas Manning, of Chattooga county, were taken to Atlanta, by Deputy Marshals Scott and Edward Saturday. ... The men were charged with violating the internal revenue laws and were placed in jail. Deputy Collector Chastain made a raid i Unio into Union county, near Blairsville, Thurs day night and destroyed a large cap and worm, the property of James J. Lloyd and John Jones. The still had been moved before the officers reached the place. Mr. Wallace Scoville, the engineer wounded in the late collision at Albany, is reported by bis physician to be doing as well ns could be expected. His wound is a ferv serious and painful one, and he will be confined to his room for some time. Saturday night at 7:45 o’clock John High, a colored man living nine miles north of Eastman, was shot by an unseen person while sittiug in his yard. The shot lodged in his breast, neck and face. Dr. J. D. Herrman, who dressed his wounds, thinks there is a probability of his re covery. AliilmniA. Mr. C. Heinz, a prominent citizen of Sel ma, died on Saturday. It seems likely that an important steel manufactory will be established at an early day' near Anniston. It is reported that the Calera Charcoal and Furnace Company will increase the number of its ovens from sixty to one hun dred. It was reported on Saturday at Eufaula on what 3eems to be good authority that Judge Chilton resigned at Ozark Wednes day, leaving an unfinished docket. Mr. A. H. Eubanks, while riding over his plantation near Pine Level, went too near a loose mule and received a kick on the foot which has crippled him for a while, causing him considerable pain. The gin house of Hon. S. F. Frazer, on the plantation UDder the management of Mr. George Reynolds, near Union Springs, was burned a few days ago. It contained about nine bales of cotton and was insured. A few days ago Mr. W. H. Ferguson, the grading contractor on the Montgomery and Florida railroad, came near dying from the effects of an overdose of lauda num, which was taken in a purely acci dental way. Articles of incorporation were filed Sat urday for the Milner & Kelrig iron works, at Birmingham, with 450,000 capital. Thev will make light cast pipe and plumbers fit- ' ad tings of both cast and malleable iron. All moulds will be made by machinery. T works will also include extensive machi The shot... The Tuskaloosa female college has opened with 105 pupils, 65 boarders rep resenting seven states, and the indications are that the college, extensively enlarged during past vacation, will be filled to its utmost capacity. The university high school opened with forty pupils, fifteen boarders. A serious shooting: affray occurred at the ~ ds ' T mines of the Gadsden Iron Coin pan v Thursday morning between Sam W elcn and Jack Day. Day was a head miner, and Welch was not satisfied about the way in which his time had been reported, and being also charged with the upsetting of a half gallon of oil, he abused Day in a most E rovoking manner, when Day told him e could not fight him. and at that W elch began to again curse him, pulled out his pistol and shot Day through his right chest. He also drew his pistol on J. H. Penny, the head boss. He backed off from the parties and took to the mountains. Dav lingered until 12 o’clock last night, when he died. Welch is still at large. Florida. The sweet potato crop promises to be immense in Levy county. Oranges are yellowing up and are looking finely. W. S. Bullock, of Ocala, has consented to permit his name to go before the demo cratic convention as a candidate for the legislature. Thomas McKinney, late of Talbotton, Ga.. died of congestion of the brain at the residence of H. C. Brown, two miles east of Micanopy, on Sunday night last, aged 26 years. .... The Willow Sink camp meeting will be gin on Friday, October 8, and continue tor several days. A number of ministers from various parts of the state will be in attend- A big boom is expected for the western part of Levy county the corning winter. The famed Suwannee river country is at tracting attention from northern capital ists, and investments are being made The Presbyterians of Ocala have organ ized. They own a beautiful lot in Gary park, paid for, and have $6.30 in the treas- urv and £1000 pledged toward the building fund. They expect to erect a church edi fice to cost $2500. • , ,. A man by the name of Blocker, section master of the Florida Southern railroad, walked into the passenger train at W au- chula Wednesday, and shot one £ne pile driving force by the name of Hawkins. The railroad com pany placed Hawk ms in charge of Dr. Gibson at Fort Ogden, and a posse left on the up train with a warrant for Blocker. Hawkins’ wound in the ior jsiouKer.
