The task of purifying the government service, after twenty-live years of republi can corruption and maladministration, is of such magnitude that delays were inev itable. The administration has moved with great caution, and has done much in the right direction. Still more remains to be done and there is no reason for further delay. The work of reform should go on steadily until there Is a trustworthy demo crat in every position outside of the classi fied service.—St. Louis Republican. Spartnnhnrg (ci Unit I more. What a Spartanburg physician lias to say in praise of Westmoreland’t Calisaya Tonic: “I am delighted with the benefit I have derived from taking Calisaya Tonic. I consider it an excellent preparation. My health Is now better thart it lias been for years. It tones up the stomach, and gives life and vigor to the whole system,” Baltimore, Md.. February 12,1886. Messrs. Westmoreland Bros.—Gentle men: Having been a confirmed dyspeptic for years, roceiving no relief from the best medical attendance, or the numerously advertised “patent medicines,” I trie'd your “Calisaya Tonic,” which I consider the best preparation before the public having given me Instant relief after years of suffering. Yours truly, Oliver P. Merryman. Brannon & Carson, wholesale agents, Columbus, Ga. sopt!7 dAwlw Chicago's Selfishness. Chicago has thus far subscribed less than $1000 for the earthquake sufferers. It is said Chicago has on hand the large sum of *1,700,000 left over from the fund contri buted to that city from various parts of the country soon after the great fire, fifteen years ago. Perhaps the best thing Chi cago could do with at least $700,000 of it would be to send It to Charleston, whore the people sorely need It now. Our Hartford mayor promptly sent to Charles ton $1000 of the remaining money con tributed here for the sufferers by the ter rible floods in the Ohio valley, a few years ago, and Chicago ought to follow the ex ample.—Hartford Times. It Will Not l>isa]>i>oint Yon. I contracted blood poison two years ago. I was treated with Potash and Mercury for over two months by physicians. I thought I was well, but the fires were only smouldering. The eruption came out anew more violent than before. A friend who had tested it in a similar case suggest ed S. S. COLLEGE, This cut is an illustratiou of **<«ol<lon** Improved Iron N«*r#»w I’ottou I*rt*8*,’* erected in the most substantial and convenient manner. It is simple in construction, and so well illustrated by the cut, that scarcely a word is needed by way of explanation. Being simply an Iron N«*r«*w anil Nut substituted for wood, the wood work of its construction, and the manner of operating it, are suhstanstantlally the same as in the old stylo of wooden plantation screw, but the timbers required are not so heavy or long. Most planters of experience prefer the wooden screw to any of the more modern Cotton Presses in use, but the difficulty and uncertainty of controlling labor and mechanical skill in the season of the year most convenient to the planter for their erec tion, usually renders it a matter of economy, as well as necessity, with him, to buy some kind of Press that requires but little mechanical skill to put it in operation. “<jlol«l«*n** Ncrew,” is a sort of compromise between the old style of wooden screw and the modern Cotton Press, combining the principal advantages of the former with the convenience and economy of the latter. It can be operated with greater fucility than the wooden screw, and the rapidity of its performance, like that of the wooden screw, or any other press, depends upon its management—as on the old style screws some planters would pack ten bales, and others thirty or thirty-five bales per day. Any ordinary mechanic who can make a good plantation gate, or common plow stock, can do the wood work. Within the last eleven years we have made and sold a great many of these screws, and have yet to hear of the first one that has not given entire satisfaction. We furnish all the Iron Work for these Screws, of which wemake two sizes, and Billy warranted. je20 wod,Ho&w6m Alabama Polytechnical Institute, THE next session of this College will open Sep- 1 lumber ldth.
