Martin is the present state senator from Alachua county, and for a longtime has held a clerkship in the land Louts Shelton and Jake Lang, both col ored, were arrested and arraigned before Justice Murden at Leesburg lust week, charged with highway robbery. The cir cumstances were as follows: Foster lewenco, a colored man, had JuBt received bv express a jug of whisky, and while on his way homo he was attaoked by several colored men, among whom were Shelton and Lang, and was forcibly robbed of Ms Jug of liquor. Prom the evidence elicited it appeared that Shelton was the leader In the robbery. Shelton was sent to Jail in default of bail. Lang gave bail for his appearance before the circuit court. Villa Rloa had an incendiary fire Satur day night. Sheriff Lipsoombe, of Heard county, has a pair of fierce bloodhounds. A depth of 200 feet has been reached by the contractors of the artesian well at Leesburg. Work is progressing favorably. Rev. W. O. Butler, proprietor of the Eiberton Leader, will remove to Anniston, Ala., and take charge of the Dally Watoh- man of that place. Bertrand, the son of D. F. Sanders, of Gordon, fell off the train and had his right leg fearfully mangled Monday evening by the Eatonton train. The withdrawal of Messrs. Henry J. Bruton and Jessie A. Wilder, the republi can candidates in Decatur county for the legislature, is announced. The Baptists of Roswell have just closed a successful protracted meeting, usii.n au arbor for their place of worship, thougii a church has been organized and a subscrip tion list is out for the building. The store house and goods belongin 'to Everett & Gregory, in East Dougherty, were destroyed by fire Sunday morning at 3 o’clock. The fire is supposed to linve been of incendiary origin. The loss is estimated at $700. No insurance. The county taxes for this year in Lowndes have been reduced from 45 to 20 mills. The county is out of debt, the tax able property has increased $170,000. There Is a healthy surplus in the treasury, and with no unusual expenditures in view. Last Thursday night when Jailer Bird song was visiting Humphries, the dual murderer, in the jail at Miliedgeville, Humphries told him nil about the con spiracy a few weeks ago to gag him and escape. He said every man in t he jail was a party to the affair, and he would have escaped with them. Humphries, however, was taken away by Sheriff Ennis that morning, just fifteen minutes before the negro, George Caldwell, made the attack upon the jailer. Dissatisfaction in regard to the legisla tive ticket in Chatham is increasing, and there is not a doubt now that another will be put in the field. It is reported that there is considerable dissension among those who secured control of the mass meeting and nominated the ticket, and that if another is put fortli much of their support will he withdrawn. It is believed the'following ticket will lie announced, and will be worked for: Gordon, Reilly and Hartridge. It is said that the liquor men are not favorable to Wilson, who is an avowed prohibitionist. And some knights are opposed to him for other reasons. A novel scene was witnessed by several hundred people at Fairburn yesterday evening. The occasion was a baptizing. The ordinance was to be administered to thirty-one candidates. The pool being out of repair, a temporary pond had been con structed in a hollow between two hills by damming a spring branch. The pastor, Rev. G. W. Colquitt, had hardly began the services when the dam gave way and the water began to rush out. Only' about fif teen were baptized before the water had gotten so low as to be insufficient. No other water being convenient,, the baptism of the other candidates was postponed. Alnlianm. The Primitive Baptists are split in twain in Blount county on Masonic and other matters. Mr. C. L. Russell, a hrakeman on the Montgomery and Mobile railroad, W'as killed on a freight train near Calhoun, in Lowndes county, Sunday morning. The Mormons and the Primitive Baptists will hold a discussion on the second Sun day in October at Iron Mountain school house, six miles north of Hamilton, in Marion. Mr. Mac. Carter, near Ashville. had been missing his chickens and investigated the matter. He found they were being eaten by an.immense bull frog. The frog was caught with a chicken’s loot sticking out of his mouth. The Tuscaloosa Manufacturing Com pany’s mills at Cott ondale are receiving a large shipment of line cotton machinery, among which are. a large number oi the newest make of looms that turn out sixty to sixty-five yards daily. Saturday last a Mr. Miller, connected with the Dunham Lumber Company, went to Greenville and made a trip of several i miles in the country. While returning to — — 1 ■ the city, at 1 o’clock Saturday night, he H IS was halted by four white men at Persim mon creek bridge, near Greenville, and robbed of $185. Mr. M. had other money with him, but the robbers, thinking they had gotten all he had, left him and went their way. They did him no harm, further than taking the money. Mr. M. Bays he has an idea who the robbers are, and will do his best to have them brought to jusiee. Four men broke out of the Tuskaloosa jail a few night ago. One of them took n steel spring out of the bottom of his shoe, with which he made a saw, cut the bars with it and four of the six prisoners in the cell got away. The names of those who escaped are Will Coleman, Elijali Hollinan, Nat Woodward and Will Tidwell, and a reward of $95 is offered for their capture by Sheriff' Prude. One fellow from an ad joining county, who had been sentenced to the penitentiary for nine years, but who had taken an appeal, refused to go out, and another 'who was confined for vagrancy refused to take advantage of the break. A young negro of Leesburg is making money by giving most remarkable musi cal performances. He holds his mouth open, taps his skull with a mallet, and thus plays tunes in tone not unlike those of the xylophone. „ Major Gallaher, of Live Oak, W ednesday night at 12:30 o’clock heard a suspicious noise, and reaching out his hand laid hold of a burglar.
