Kte. Oeortrla. Hon. W. C. Pickett, who htw been quito sick for the past two weeks, died at his home in Clayton Sunday morning at 12 o’clock. A Arc broke out at the Georgia depot at Athens Saturday morning in a bale of cot ton. It was thought to have been extin guished, but later in the day it again caught, and seventy-six boles were burned The cotton was owned by J. W. Hearden and' had been shipped from Madison, Ga The loss is fully covered by insurance The Are caught front a passing engine. Rosa Dixon, a nurse in tho house of Fred M. Hall, in Savannah, who was shot by her husband Friday evening, died from tho effects of her injury earlv Sunday ntorning. Allen Powell, the assailant, has not yet been captured. Hon. Henry D. Capers withdraws from the legislative race in Bartow county. The value of town property of Buena Vista, according to the tax assessor’s re port, is fl23,600. The lumber kiln of Mr. John P. Ken nedy in Johnson county, was consumed by Are Friday morning. The ginhouse of Mr. Brantly, of Johnson eounty, with six bales of cotton, was de stroyed by Are several days ago. Six hundred head of cattle belonging to the estate of Seborn SheAield, who was killed near Arlington last Friday night, will be sold on the 9th of October at pub lic outcry. Rev. A. Marshall, pastor of the Gaines- villel Baptist church, who resigned the charge some ten days ago, has been called again at a salary of $1500 to serve the same church. The negroes in Drayton, Dooly county, had quite a serious shooting scrape Satur day night last. Five were shot. Dr. Niles has three under treatment, two of whom will recover, but the third will probably die. James Dent’s rice mill, machinery, stor age house, together with sixty acres of rice stored therein, were destroyed by (ire last. Friday morning about It o’clock at bis rice plantation on the Altamaha, about twelve miles from Brunswick The origin of the lire is not known. Mr. Dent went into the engine room and heard a cracking noise, and ordered the engineer to stop and oil up. He then went outside and discovered the Aames coming through the roof. Ainbnmn. There were two a - tempts, one to fire the stables, which was unsuccessful; the other attempt resulted in the destruction of buildings valued at $3000. On. street car was consumed. Mobile had a sensational murderatabout midnight Friday night. There was a drunken row among negro women at a bar room corner of Warren and St. Louis s reels. A woman named Lillie Harris forced Maggie Bell into a fight, and draw ing a knife tried to stab her. Maggie warded the blow and was cut in the hand. The; knife then fell to theground, Maggie picked it up and quick as a flash cut Lil lie Harris’ throat. Tne woman died almost immediately. William Coleman, a young white man, was arrested Saturday at Eufaula under a reward of .550 offered by the sheriff of Tus- kaloosa county. Coleman broke jail there September 18th. He has been a resident of Russell county. It is not known what he was he'd for in Tuskaloosa. Mr. T. Mabson and family, ol Union Springs, will leave for Kline, Texas, tin first of this week, where they will locate. Mr. Mabson intends engaging in farming. A special to the Montgomery Advertiser from Rutledge says: Old Wiggins' prophe cy failed to come to time, and lie’should now meet the fate of false prophets in the olden times. However, your correspond ent received a fright anyway. The. writer, in company with Mr. George H. Cobh, representing Messrs. Goetter, Well & Co., and Mr. Reese Harvey, of the firm of Dent & Harvey, si>ent the night of September 29 with Mr. W. A. Campbell at Shirley post office, Covington county. About 11 o’clock we were aroused by a terrible ex plosion, which we took to be the JWiggins earthquake, but upon investigation proved to be the explosion of n keg of powder in the storehouse of Mr. Campbell, about 100 yards distant. ITow or where tho fire originated is a mystery, but in a few short minutes Mr. Campbell was made a poor man, having lost bis entire storks notes, etc. The hard earnings of ten year, of economy and honesty were swept away by a disastrous fiend. There was no in surance, but Mr. Campbell next morning had Mr. Cobb to address a letter to each of his creditors, asking only time, as he would pay every dollar he owed. Ben Turner, colored, radical nominee for congress from the fourth district, has announced positively his intention to make a race for election. Henry Brooks, tiie 13-year-old son of L. R. Brooks, superintendent of the Linn Iron Works, at Birmingham, while out hunting Saturday, stopped at. the Itlyton spring to get a drink. He was holding his gun by the barrel, the butt resting upon the ground, when it slipped and fell ana was discharged. The load entered bis arm, lacerating it terribly, but breaking no bones. Horiihi. The record of real estate transfers in Orange comity for the week ending Sep tember 18 fooi, up an aggregate ol $(10,8-4. The convening of the A merican Shipping and Industrial League, to bo held at Pensa cola October 5, has been postponed to No vember 10. Major Coupor writes to General Man ager Conaut, of the Florida Southern rail road, that the demand for lots down at Punta Gorda is immense. He says: ‘1 “ ra positively frightened at the demand lor and sale of lots at Punta Gorda. I put them at $300 per lot of 40 feet front and have sold nearly $11,000 in two days.
