SOME STRANGE PUNISHMENTS.

A Boston pnpor of 1819 describes the ex
ecution of sentence pronounced by the
Russian courts against an author who had
published some book on the liberties of
the people. A scaffold was erected in the
public square; tho crjir nud great magis
trates attended. Tho leaves of the con
demned book were then rolled up in sep
arate pieces and the prisoner forced to
swallo.v them, or literally to eat his own
Words. The nitending physicians agree
ing when he had enough for one meal, he
was led back to the prison. Three un
pleasant meals finished the lost remnant
of the book.
In Salem the wearing of long Imir was
some time a criminal offense, but always
an abomination ior men. When Rndicott
was magistrate t here he caused this order
to be passed: “John (lutshel is fyened ten
shillings for building upon the town’s
ground without leave, and in ease lie shall
cut of bis long hairiof Ids head in tojsovill

■hall have abated five shillings ids fine, to
be paid into tile town meeting wltldn two

go into his building in the mean time.”

woman was accused of witchcraft, she was

the following: The Dutch have a mode of
execution which iH well calculated to in
spire terror, without putting the sufferer
to extraordinary pain. The criminal is

chamber when you are trying to get to

A Monckton, New Brunswick, man who
had been seriously ill a long time vomited
up a large live lizzard, which ran away.
In North Carolina the spiders spin webs
and embroider words on them. One spun
“Indian—a war,” and all the superstitious
are soared.
While digging a, well near Ellendale, 1).
T., S. W. Davis found two live frogs im
bedded in the hard clay eighteen feet
below the surface of the ground.
J. F. Bussey, of Dawson, Ga., has a
chicken that has for Home time been roost
ing at night on his cow’s back. As regular
as night comes the chicken goes to the
cow, dies upon her back and there re
mains contentedly till next morning.
A Keya Paha (Nebraska) woman, whose
husband was called east on business, not
wishing the team and plow to remain idle,
went to work in the Held and broke
twenty-flve acres of prairie land. Besides
this she took care of two children and did
the chores about the |»laeo.
11. L. Clark, of Higganum, Conn., brags
because one of his ducks has laid 100 eggs
this season, which is four times the yield
of the average duck. What is more, from
one of those 1(H) eggs was hatched a four
legged duckling that still lives and walks,
using all of its legs, as if that was the prop
er thing for young ducks.
A farmer living near Geneseo, 111., says
he left a number of milk cans by the side
of the road for a short time. A muskrat
pawed oil’ the cover of one of the cans and
crawled in. After it lmd drunk all the
milk it could hold it- could not get out.
In jumping around in the can it churned
the milk into butter. A ball of butter
formed about the muskrat and smothered
it,
