6 DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 6, 1886. A WOMAN'S CLAIM. i Iatereatlng Salt Aralimt the EUate of Million ■Ire Courtney. Philadelphia Press Hpoclal Wilmington. Del., September 28.—Suit WU begun in the orphan’s court of |New Castle county this morning against the estate of Henry C. Courtney, the wealthy match manufacturer, a member of the Diamond Match Company, who died in this city about five months ago. The pro ceedings were started through a petition of Mrs. Martin Coughtrey, of England, that oh she was the lawfhl wife of praying the dece ho deceased the court apportion her a dower out of his estate. As Courtney left about fl,600,000 at his death divided among his widow and children, there will doubtless be a bitter fight. It Is known that when Courtney first came to this country, about thirty-live ho had a ho attained financial prosperity he estab lished a household, and at the time of his death was the head of a family of nine children. Mrs. Coughtrey, who claims to be the discarded English wife, is the daughter of a match makor in London, who, It is snid, taught Courtney the secret of dipping the Hticks, which poculiar pro cess he was the only man In the United BtateB for many years Ifamiliar with, and It brought him his fortune. The wife states that Courtney was a very poor man while in England, and having a position offered him here, accepted it. out was unable to bring her across with him. However, he promised to send for her as soon as he was able, and for a long time afterwards wrote to her regularly. His communications censed after a year or two, and were never re-established. In disposing of his property in his will Courtney makes no nllusion whatever to the petitioner and her four children, but bequeaths all of his estate to his family hero. Mrs. Courtney employed an attor ney by cable upon learning of her hus band’s death, nrul will prosecute her claims to the end. MISS GANNON GIVES BAIL. Tlie Usuis of the Article Tor Which She llorse- irhlppcri Mr. I.cnhsrt. Now York Bun. George H. Lenlinrt, who was horsewhip ped by Miss Minnie Gannon in Jersey City on Monday evening because he had written an article about h r in the Jersey City Journal, got a warrant for tier arrest yesterday. She accordingly appeared be fore Justice Robinson, and gave bail in fJOO to await the action of the grand jury. I lor bondsman, Abraham Post, is a member of the grand jury. The article in the Journal was entitled “Society Girl Forgers.” It accused two young ladies of having raised cheeks given them by their father from $8 and $10 to $80 and $100 respectively. The young ladies were described as Catholics, and the veil which pretended to obscure their furl her identity wils lifted further by Statements that their father was tempo rarily embarrassed last spring, and that they lived not a thousand miles from the Jersey City post olliee. The father of the Misses Mamie and Annie Gannon, the young ladies referred to, is Thomas Gannon, a wealthy copper smith, who lives at. 10 Sussex place, next door to Gov. Loon Abbott's home. It is explained that about six months ago Miss Mamie Gannon asked her father for some money with which to go shopping. Her fat tier signed a blank check mid told her to till it for any amount not exceeding $50. Mihs Gannon’s purchases were more extensive l imn she hud anticipated, and she tilled In the check for $85. She thoughtlessly neglected to inform her father of what she Itncl done, being ignorant of business matters, mid, ns she says, know ing that it would be all right anyway. The result, however, was that when her father received the ebook from the bank a few days later he supposed that his daughter had written $50, and that the amount had been raised by some one else. He went to the bank and demanded an explanation, but when he found that his daughter hud presented the check lie had nothing moro to say. EMERY A. STORRS' DEATH. A SemmtlmiHl Story Alleging Tlint lie Wits Polwmoil. Chicago, October 4.—A sensational Btory alleging that Emory A. Storrs, the well known lawyer and orator, who was found dead in hiH bed in a hotel in Ottawa, 111., one morning a little over n year ago, came to his death by poison lms been the talk of the town to-day, and furnished no little amusement. The story, which was con structed in thu olliee of a St. Paul (Minn.) paper, and is supposed to have been written bv ail employe of the paper, who was formerly a Chicago journalist, is, in brief, us follows: “When Joe Mackin, the ‘tine worker,' was arrested lie in sisted that his friends, who were as deep in the mud ns ho was in the mire, should employ Storrs to defend him. After much demur Mackin’s wish was granted. Storrs was promised a fee of f10,000. which Mackin’s friends were to pay. Tlie law yer wormed from his client many secrets which implicated not only the gang, but -persons high in political and onlcml cir cles. The persons thus implicated knew that Mr. Storrs knew enough about them .to cause them n great deal oftrouble, and ) In order to close his mouth forever, and at the same time escape the payment of the $10,000 fee, concluded to kill him. Two men, one of whom it is alleged is known, were employed to do the work, though not 'Until Mackin had refused an offer of $50,- 000 to go quietly to jail and thus shield ids friends, and they undertook to systemati cally administer digitalis to Storrs. Times and places where the drug was placed iti liquor he was about to drink are given, though with no degree of deffniteness. Mr. Storrs finally succumbed. Persons who should know whether there is even n vestige of truth in this story said to-day that it was wholly untrue as far ns the death of Mr. Storrs iwas concerned. ‘Joe’ Markin, in his cell at Joliet, laughed at it. W. S. Elliott, for seven years Mr. Storrs* law partner, said he had no reason to be lieve it. State Attorney Grinuell pro- * nounced it “a barefooted lie,” and Alike McDonald snid the storyl was ridiculous. Nobody could be found who would give the story a second thought, except to laugh at it. Mr. Storrs died of paralysis of the heart, superinduced by the soeial habits which characterized his later years.” Struma' YerillrU. Strange verdicts from the west continue to multiply. A Colorado jury that investi gated the killing of a gambler iu a shoot ing affray found that his death resulted from “lend poisoning.” Not long ago a Dakato jury found thnt a man who and stolen a horse and had been lynched had “committed suicide.” Another man, guilty of some misconduct, was found to nave died “through a visitation of Provi dence and his neighbors.” — Baltimore American. A Murderer anil llaplst Lynched. Galveston, Tex., October 5.—A special to the News from Throckmorton, Tex., says: An armed mob broke into the jail here Sunday night, took out a negro named Tom Favier, put a rope around iris neck, dragged him a quarter of a mile and then hanged him to a tree. Favier had con fessed that he killed a farmer named Uring and outraged and murdered Uriug’s daughter.
