The Ocmulgee river is very low, and the boating business is at a stand still. lion. Dudley DeBose, of Washington, Oft., and Miss Emma Carr Robertson, daughter of Judge W. ,1. Robertson, of Charlottesville, Va., were married Thurs day night. On Sunday at usual conference Rev. Stokes Walker was elected pastor of the Monroe Baptist church for the ensuing year. The rice crop is unusually good, and the harvesting is going on finely along the Altamaha, but planters are complaining loudly over the low prices. A warrant was sworn out Saturday in Bainbridge by Mr. T. G. Williams against a man by the name of Drake for kissing Miss Williams forcibly against her will. There will be a reunion of the survivors of the Ninth Georgia Artillery Battalion on the second Wednesday in October at Ponce de Leon Springs, near Atlanta. Mr. Byrd Cook, of Coweta, has raised and gathered from a two-horse farm this year fifteen hales of cotton, averaging nearly 600 pounds each, and is not through picking yet. Mr. Bob Compton lost his hand and half of his arm in a gin near Shellman yester day. He was the only support of a wid owed mother. Prank Powell, of Drayton, stuck a nail in his foot. He poured turpentine on it to take out the soreness. For some unknown cause he held a burning match near it, which ignited the turpentine, burning his foot badly before the flames could be ex tinguished. Tin 1 SuCest sail llcat. In October, 1886,1 contracted that dread ful disease, blood poison. 1 went under treatment of a physician at once. At the end of the first month I became alarmed at the progress of the disease in my sys tem, mid abandoned the doctor. A friend told me of S. S. S and its wonderful effects. I gave it a trial, and began to improve with the first bottle. I nave taken ten bottles, and am to-day a well man. To all who are in need of a blood purifier I v. i’.l sn.v. by all means try Swift's Specific. It is the safest and best of them all. E. II. Black. 93 S. 14th St... N n ni'k, N. J. I saw no cannibals during my stay in the Sandwich islands. That's a tradition the mention of which in Honolulu would mor tally oft’end any native. They deny the story of Captain Cook, and hold that tiie Sandwich islanders were never cannibals. —An American Traveler, s pounas oi couon in nve nours one day last week. Bruce has already picked over a bale of cotton this season. He weighs only seventy rounds himself. Aside from his farm work he does the milking for the family. Mat Worsham, tho negro who was shot, at Walnut grove by Dr. Wayne Swords, is dead. Swords was drunk and had had a fuss with a drunken negro very much like Worsham. Worsham came into the store where Swords was, and lie thought lie was the negro he had been fussing with. As Worsham approached him he shot him down. Swords made his escape. Mr. John Kendrick’s gin house, at the foot of Kenesnw mountain, near Marietta, was burned Wednesday, together with nine bales of seed cotton. A match in the cotton was the cause. No insurance. Alnlitiniii. Preparations are complete for the an nual fair of the Huntsville Agricultural and Mechanical association, beginning on the 12th instant and to continue for five days. The Marion Standard says: Hester Clarke, colored, says if she lives to see Christmas she will be 123 years old. The mother of the editor remembers her as old Aunt Hester when she was a child. The Rutledge Enterprise shows what Alabama boys can do in cotton picking. It says: James D. Stallings, aged 16 years, picked 452 pounds; Mr. R. L. Crowell, 404; Tommie Megan, aged 15 years, 320 pounds. The foiowing officers have been appoint ed for Howard College: Posi, Adjutant, Capt. R. P. Smith, of Kentucky; commis sary, Pendleton Cheek, of Birmingham; quartermaster, J. M. Thomas, Bibb coun ty; steward, B. F. Wiggins, Monroeville; superintendent mess hall, P. G. Caffey, Verbena. Gabe Watts, the old colored man who attempted to kill all of his children in Phillips’ beat, Etowah county, a few weeks ago, died in the jail at Gadsden a few days ago. He was emaciated, having eaten nothing for several days. The Mobile Register says: There is in this city an unfortunate woman, who spends about nine-tenths of the year in the g uardhouse or the jail. Her name is Gussie 'can, alias Berry Lee, and she is a con firmed vagrant and drunkard. She was released from the county jail about sixteen days ago, after serving a three months’ sentence, and got into the guardhouse the next day. Her sojourn there expired Saturday morning, and Saturday night she was back again on the same old charge. She will now rusticate in the county jail for the next ninety days. Gussie was at one time a sawdust queen, and is said to have been a very successful bareback rider. The new Presbyterian church at Green ville was dedicated by Rev. Dr. Webb, of Union Springs, on iust Sunday. Kloriilit. The rollerskating craze has again broken out among the colored people at Si. Au gustine. Orlando has secured the use of the Meth odist school house in that city tor her pub lic school. A negro, Jerry O’Neal, and horse were drowned about ten miles east of Kissim mee Thursday evening. There are 1203 colored and 993 white voters stricken from the registration books of Marion county. Mr. Codington’s ice factory at Bartow is rapidly going up. He expects to have his machinery this week. Postmaster Spier, of Oria.ndo, has re- J ceived and put up letter boxes at the con venient corners in that city. Spring Park, Marion county, will soon have its new church edifice completed. It will cost £2500. A £1000 school house will soon be erected. Lieutenant-Commander Gibson, now . commandant at the Pensacola navy yard, will be soon relieved from duty at tnat post by Captain Edward H. Lull. The Indians keep up a terrific howling every night at the fort at St. Augustine, indulging in their war dances. The up roar continues until after midnight and is , almost enough to frighten people into hysterics. A barbed wire fence has been put up on t both sides of the track of the Jacksonville, , Tampa and Key West railway from 'Jack sonville to Palatka, and will no doubt be extended the whole length ol the line. There will be no more cow killing. j A democratic mass meeting at Me- Davids, Escambia county, last Friday, nominated Judge Maxwell and J. B. Rob erts. both of Pensacola, and R. W. Brooks, of Bluff Springs, to compose a legislative ticket. It is in opposition to the regu.ar ticket. , It is said that the Florida Railway and Navigation road will run their line south directly to Plant City, where they will make arrangements with the South Hon da to use their track into Tampa. It taking this route the thriving towns of Brooks- ville and Dade City will be left off of the line. Conductor Warden, of the Florida Rail way and Navigation, while on his train between Quincy and Chattahoochee, oil Thursday last, was shot in the head and painfully hurt. He had to go to Marianna to have the ball extracted. It is believed that the outrageous and dastardly act was done by parties who entertain an exasper ated feeling against the road on account of their stock being killed by it. It Will N'it Disappoint Von. I contracted blood poison two years ago. I was treated with Potash and Mercury for over two mouths by physicians, i thought 1 was well, but the fires were only smouldering. The eruption came out anew more violent than before. A friend who had tested it in a similar case suggest ed S. S. S. I began its use, ami com menced to improve from the start. As tho disease passed away, it left me with mer curial rheumatism as the result of taking tiie mercury and potash mixtures. That is also yielding to the influence of Swift’s Specific, and will soon be gone. To the afflicted 1 would say, give it a fair trial, and you will not lie disappointed in re sults, Joseph Kern, 60-1 Brooklyn St. New York, May 29, 1886.
