COLUMBUS ENQUIRER-SUN : SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 10, 18M. The Empire Flour Mills of Columbus. Their Immense aud M.'urnlflrenf Plant —Their Flour FIoorM and Their \cres of Machinery. The Men Who Own nnd Operate These .Mills and the Immense llusinesH They l)o. The grinding of floor has become a science. In the days of “ould lang syne,” when a boy rode a donkey to the little water mill on the “crick” with a peck of v heat in ono end of the bag and a rock in the other, our forefathers desired no im provement bocause they eould conceive of none But in these latter days of large citios, dense population, railway facilities, and other avenues of travel and commerce, the flour trade has bo- come a great feature of the world's commerce. The price of wheat is quoted da *ly along with that of gold and cotton and other staples and in- dispensible products. Hour is at once a luxury nnd a necessity, and it is eaten more generally by human being than any other cereal food in the world. Beautiful, white, health dealing and nutritious, it is the queen cereal of the nations. While American flour is the most popular in the world, and while the demand for it, both for home and foreign consumption, lias been largely met for nearly half a century by the enormous mills that havo sprung up as a result of the demand for this flour, theRo mills, up to a short time ago, were built and operated on a large scale almost exclusively in the northern states. But the “new south” that is coming to the front now, aglow with furnaces, noisy with the hum of wheels and pulleys, and throbbing with enterprise ofs every description, has entered also into the manufacture of the finest grades of flour. And, indeed, from the present outlook, the south bids fair to outstrip the other sections of the country in this particular lino of manufacture. Columbus, which is emphatically the nmnufac- turing town of Georgia, is not only sustaining fier reputation ns a general manufacturing centre by manufacturing flour, hut Columbus lias within her city limits, running day and night, the largest, costliest and most extensively patron ized flouring mills in the entire south. These nro the Empire Mills, owned and operated by Mr. Geo. W. * Woodruff nnd his two sons, Henry and Earnest, who are associated with him in the enterprise. Many citizens of Col umbus would he astonished to know the tre mendous amount of business done by these mills, and they would be no leas astonished to go through the colossal establishment from bottom to top and end to end, and see what southern enterprise has done for a southern city in erect ing a manufacturing palace and crowding every available square inch of it with intricate, costly nnd improved machinery. Columbus is justly proud of the Empire Mills, and any city in the union would have just cause to be. Yesterday a reporter for the Enquiueii- Sun visited the Empire Mills, and was kindly invited by Mr. Earnest WoodrutF to go through the establishment with him. Mr. Earnest WoodrutF, though quite a young man, has an alertness and tact for all the minutia and details of business, which it has taken men less gifted by nature a life to acquire. In nil the square acres of revolving machinery there was not a pulley nor a wheel nor a pipe nor an aper ture nor a hand nor a shaft, whose functions niul relations to the rest of the machinery Mr. Woodruff could notexplaiu satisfactorily in an instant. His unusual aptitude in this respect made the job of writing up the establishment, which would have been no small task under other circumstances, quite an easy ono to the reporter. The entire plant of the Empire Mills is a sort, of village islanded to itself in the midst of the city. It takes up the entire block in one direction and nearly all of it in the other. It is built of brick after the most npproved methods of architecture, nnd is one of the staunchest buildings in the state. One is struck on entering with the parlor like neatness of the mill. It is the neatest work ing establishment of any kind the reporter ever saw. It discounts a millinery store. You could not soil a silk handk jrehief anywhere in the es tablishment outside of the engine room, and you scarcely soil one in there. The pipes, elevators and feeders through which the grain goes from the time it enters until it is packed for shipment, have ft combined length of eleven miles. Some idea of the size of the establishment may be gathered (Yotn this fact. There arc four floors in this large manufactory, every one of them crowded and pulsing with machinery. Not a great while ago an entire change was made from stone to porcelain rollers at a cost of $a),000. The wheat in the Empire Mills never touches a stone now during its circuit of eleven miles from the time it enters until it is packed for sale. Thirty-six of Wegnmun’s patent porcelain rollers are kept running all the time. This machinery is the costliest in the market, and the grades of flour it turns out cannot be surpassed in the world. The three pet brands of Hour of the Empire Mills are ‘‘King of Patents,” “Snow Flake” and “Silver Leaf,” and they are likewise favorites with all dealers and customers. The mills never use anything but the best No. 2 red wheat Before being ground this wheat goes through six patent cleaning machines, all of which have been improved and improvements patented eight different times. Besides the flour manu factured, the Empire Mills also turn out 1500 bushels of meal a day, Five stones grinding meal are run day and night. Nothing but the best Eusopa stone is used for mill rooks. Six hundred barrels of flour are turned out every clay. The number of bauds employed is about fifty, but the same amount of work with the old fashioned machinery would require 150 hands. The machinery of the Empire Mills is all run very slowly, this being necessary to pro duce a tine brand of flour. Indeed it may be said of the Empire Mills, as the poet says of the mills of the gods: “The Empire Mills grind slowly, But they griud exceedingly small. Though with patience stand they waiting, With exactness griud they all.” In one department of these mills through which the flour passes ten currents of air aie blown through cloth to purify the flour ns it goes through. lu the mills, and constantly in use, are several “Jonathan Mills Universal Flour Dressers,” which were recently added at a cash cost of $2000. The most of the barrels used by the Empire Mills are manufac tured by their own employes and in their own barrel factory, kept and run for their private use. Their warehouse is large and well equipped with the latest improvements, and has a capacity of 5000 barrels. They have a large elevator engine entirely separate from the other machinery, so that the elevator can run if desirable when the mills have shut. This emergency, however, never arises, as the Empire Mills would only stop for a break down. They never shut down T oe machinery of the mills is proDelled by a 300- horse power Reynolds Corliss engine, which is one of the finest machines in the south. The fly wheel belt in the Empire Mills is two feet wide, one hundred feet long, and composed of the thickest double sole leather to be found in the market. The belt cost $1000. As soon as the mills find time to shut down for the purpose, four new boilers costing $.5000 will be put in. But the mills are uow 1000 barrels behind the orders al ready in. Mr. E. T. Torbett. the very thorough and com petent engineer of the mills, has invented a val uable arrangement for oiling the machinery au tomatically while it is in motion. The “King Pbtent” brand produced by the Empire Mills is the most popular brand now on the market of the world, and sells rapidly for cents a barrel more than any other flour. These mills ship their flour all over the states of Georgia, Florida and Alabama, and to many distant points. Their flour is nutritious and un alloyed, and does not liko many brands turned out by unscrupulous mill men, contain tolc, soap stone and other alloys and adulterations. The Empire Mills are prepared for competition from any source, and have no cause to fear it. Mr. George W. Woodruff is one of our ablest and best informed business men. His success has been largely due to his strict integrity and fair dealing, coupled with business shrewdness. His two sons, Messrs. Henry and Ernest Wood ruff, arc two young men that have made clean and brilliant records in business circles wherever they have moved, and the success of the Empire Mills is in a lurge measure due to their industry, energy and ability. Mr. H. T. Jackson, the travel ing salesman'of the mills, is a regular Corypheus among the drummers, and histrips pan out large profits for the establishment. He is alert, active, shrewd and honest, and is a model commercial salesman in every sense of the word. Taken all in all, the Empire Mills arc equipped with the best men, methods and machinery of any in the country, and they will be in the future as they have been in the past, the pride of the “Queen City of the Chattahoochee.” For Tax Receiver. I announce myself a candidate for election to he office of Tax Receiver, and respectfully solicit the votes of the citizens of Muscogee county.
