Southern Progress and the Proof to Back
it Up.
Dlllrlsl Figure Showing the (.rest Advance In
Wealth—The Valao or Southern Crn|i« for Two
Season* Coni|iarcil -A Marvelous Inereune In
Mnnuf'nctures how Industrie* That Him*

The southern .states nro on n boom and
the growth of southern wealth and in
dustry is simply wonderful. The interest
in the movement lias been great and has
aroused the press and people of the whole
country, for there is a movement south
ward not only of capital and labor, but
actually of the factories themselves. The
interest shown in the south, the desire
to know all about its lands, its wealth, its
resource's, has been the cause of the pub
lication of numerous books and pamphlets
on the subject, and has finally induced
the government to attempt, through the
bureau of statistics, to issue a sort of sup
plement to the census, relating the advance
made by the south in every field of en
terprise since 1NS0. Hindi a work is needed,
ior the census, taken just as this section
was issuing from an era of depression
and backwardness, due to political and
race troubles, gives a false and erroneous
Idea of the south of to-dny.
THERE is PROOF UNDENIABLE
of progress and advance in wealth in the
increased assessments of the several states,
Whatever misfortunes may have overtaken
individual enterprises. From 1879, the
census year, to 1881V—seven years—the
southern states have advanced in wealth,
according to official reports, as follows:

This is a creditable improvement—an
advance of $1)33,10-1,007, or 12.7 per cent,
against an increase in population of 17.5
percent. The assessed value of property
per capita in the south in 1876 was $138.20;
in 1880, $160.60; and it is $103.35 to-day.
From these figures there is no appeal.
They represent, it is true, much below the
real wealth of the southern states, but the
progress demonstrated is undeniable. The
south, in an era of depression and of low
prices, is growing richer 7 per cent, per
yoar. If a comparison were made on the
relntivo values of 1876 and 1886 the show
ing would be even more striking and im
pressive. It would have been most un
fortunate if southern manufactures had
prospered at the expense
OF AGRICULTURE.
The diversification of crops, which has
so long been demanded as essential to
southern progress, the abandonment of
“the all cotton idea” has already begun,
and while the great staple still continues
the chief product of the south, instead of
forming half, it now constitutes only one-
third of its agricultural yield. There is a
larger production of food crops, wheat,
oats, in particular rice and grain of all
kinds, while numerous small crops give
that diversification necessary to healthy
farming. The value of the crops of the
twelve southern states for the two seasons
of 1880 and 1885 was

Total .$745,050,690 $612,278,318
This is an increase of $132,772,378, or 22
per cent., a very good showing in the face
of the marked decline in prices. With the
staple crops there has been an even more
marked advance in those branch indus
tries, fruit growing, milk fanning, dairy
ing and stock raising, for which the south
is so well adapted, but which it neglected
until attention was called to its advantages.
The fruit and garden truck crops have in
creased from$10,751,5Wto$23.371.000, while
the value of stock in the southern states,
including the immense herds of cattle in
Texas, has sprung from $320,378,tit to
$573,701,762, or 69 per cent.
NEW INDUSTRIES
have sprung into existence and the pro
duction of the south has grown rapidly
since the census was taken, as follows:
other section can equal—cheap land, excel
lent labor in abundance, cheap cotton,
coal, iron and lumber—the four articles
most needed in manufactures—cheap water
power sufficient to turn all the mills in the
world, cheap living, nearness to materials
and the markets, and excellent and im
proving means of transportation.
The southern cotton mills have in
creased in number in six years from 161 to
310, and in production from $16,387,598 to
$30,726,250, or 88 per cent. They have
weathered severe storms, resulting from a
too rapid growth, have secured now mar
kets and are now exporting goods. It is
recognized by the New England mills that
they cannot compete with those of the
south in certain lines of goods. A signifi
cant fact in the reports of the bureau of
commerce is that the chief, indeed the
only, increase in t he exports of manufac
tured products from this country during
the past twelve months has been in the j
class of cotton goods made mainly by ,
southern mills.
If the south, recovering from the devas- j
tation and depression of a long war, years j
of mismanagement and political strife, can
accomplish so much, revive its agriculture, I
increase its manufactures and develop !
every industry, what may we not look for-
ward to for it in the future, with all its I
great resources and natural wealth inviting
development?
