The woman used iih a tool by Mr. Van Buren for the overthrow of Mr. Cal houn’s political hopes was a picturesqi Washington and prominent figure in society then and during the next llft.v years. The national metropolis in those days resembled, us hus been well said, in recklessness and extravagance, the spirit of the English seventeenth eentury, so graphically portrayed in Thackeray’s irist, rather than' the dignified caste Humorist, of the nineteenth cycle of Christianity. Laxity of morals and the coolest disre gard possible characterized that period of •our existence. Mrs. Gen. Eaton ruled Andrew Jackson as completely as he ruled the democratic party. She was the daughter Of William O’Neill, a rollicking Irishman, who was in liis day the landlord of what was then the lending public house in Washington city. Among other congressmen who were guests there was Andrew Jackson, then a senator from Tennessee. It was here he became interested in the landlord’s bril liant duughter Margaret, called by her friends “ Peg” O’Neill. Before she wus 1ft years of age she married a hand some naval otllcer, John Bowie Tim- berlake. tie died—some say that he committed suicide—at Fort Mahon, in 1828, leaving his accounts as purser in a very mixed condition. Alter the death of Timberlake, Commodore Pat terson ordered Lieutenant Randolph to take the purser’s books and perform the duties of purser. On the return home of the Constitution it was discovered that Timberlake or Ran dolph was a defaulter to the government to a very large amount. A court of inquiry was held on Randolph and he was acquit ted, but Amos Kendall, the fourth auditor of the treasury department, charged the defalcation to Randolph. President Jack- son. notwithstanding the decision of the court, dismissed Lieutenant Randolph from the navy and refused to give him a hearing. The lieutenant, infuriated by disgrace and pecuniary ruin, in a state of excite ment pulled the president’s nose in the cabin of a steamboat at the Alexandria wharf, lie was immediately seized and thrust on shore, the president declaring that ho was able to punish him. lie charged that Jackson dismissed him and sustained Kendall’s decision in order to , save Gen. Eaton, who was Timberlake’s I bondsman, from having to make good the defalcat Ion. General Eaton, who had boarded with ilia friend, General Jackson, at O’Neill’s tavern, soon afterward married the Widow Timberlake, who was then one of those examples of that Irish beauty, whio ‘it marked by good blood, so suggests ITCHING Skin Diseases Instantly Re lieved bv Cuticura.
